For one that performs decently you are looking at £400.
Up-scaling is good for SD DVD's and benefits in colour, blacks and response.

Toshiba do a real affordable player in the sub £200 bracket (name?  jfgi I can't be arsed Wink  )  but it takes an age to boot and an age to read the initial track lead in on a disc.
The sensible froogle and top choice until they drop in price, unless you are a complete movie buff is to buy an xbox 360 with an HDMI output (either Elite version or a pro with HDMI) and buy an xbox 360 HD DVD player add on, for the Elite you are looking at...£300, £400 with the HD DVD unit the same as a dedicated seperate unit and a pro with the same performance in HD will actually save you £50 to £70.
The xbox 360 HD DVD unit also has the added bonus of being USB 2 and can easily connect to a PC so you can HD DVD ROMS on your puter and movies to.
As for performance, the xbox 360 unit performs better than the Toshiba low end separate I mentioned . Not as good as a movie buffs high end separate but if you don't really know what you are looking for you wouldn't notice the difference anyway. Oh you also have the added boon of having the best games console on the market  Wink
Oh almost forgot, if you buy an xbox 360 HD DVD unit before the end of January you will also be able to claim 5 free HD DVD movies from Microsoft, a value of on average of £100 to £125, bargain!

I'm in the market for an additional HD TV for the bedroom and went out to the shops topday to see some in their physical manifestations as the web is sometimes a bit panmts for window shopping.
Saw some Bluray DVd players in Currys in the £250 range Grant, so looks like things are moving on the price front.
Avg price was still £400 for the majority of players mind you. Plus Bluray = supporting evil Sony in theior plans for DRM all thing digital domination, not the mention The world domination to. Wink
For another £50 you could get a PS3 that plays PooRay discs as a standard function.

I've been waiting to see if PooRay or HighDegredation will come out on top.  I don't feel like having two players for HD content and am always annoyed at companies that try to corner a market on anything.  Hopefully Sinny will lose out and be forced to sign on to HD soon.

There are dual players available for the PC for about £140, so if your PC is close enough to your TV you are onto a winner....

Nice one, I saw the Toshiba one you mention in Tesco and I am considering it for the bedroom.
HD DVD wins over PooRay tbh.
Just hope it wins the format wars, then again if I recall it did take a few years for the Betamax V VHS format war to be decided and even at that the purists still chose Betamax every time.

Yeah. Hoping that doesn't happen but at least the gap between HD and BR is much tighter.  Beta was leagues ahead of VHS.

I may look into the dual format DVD players eventually.  Not to worried about it until I get a new TV where it makes a fuck one way or the other.

So it looks like High Degradation is due to go tits up before too long.  Not enough companies behind it now.  The last few may try to stick it out for a while but I'll be surprised if they go more than a year.

Damn shame.
