I am a leg man

« on: December 31, 2007, 05:53:37 PM »

My mums Virgin Media service is down.

Basically after speaking to tech help its because her IP is stuck to *starting 169.

How can I change this back? Tech support took me through a reset RUN command that didn't work.

I cannot reset manually as Virgin do not use static IP. I could however 'see' the modem puting in an IP begining 80.

TBH im a little lost and a re-install is all I have left as options.

Can anyone help?

Only change made before issue is the addition of a printer (through USB) - software also installed.

Thanks!

Tom

Are you connected to the modem using the USB or Patch cable? If it's connected using via USB then get rid of it and use the patch (network) cable instead, it's faster and less prone to faults.

Tried release/renew on your adapters?

tech support said it was because it was "stuck" on 169.x.x.x?

pish

169.x.x.x is the windows auto configuration address your NIC will pick up if there is no DHCP server available.

So, it sounds like their problem, not yours. You must be using Ethernet because you wouldn't get a 169 address if you didn't have an Ethernet cable plugged in.

Faulty Ethernet cables can cause this problem btw.

*edit* I hope you don't mean a fresh install of the OS ..that's using a 5000hp steam hammer to crack a quails egg mate.. Huh?

If all you have is the cable coming into the supplied modem and that connected to your mums PC via ethernet cable into a network card which is basically set to automatic on everything, then the fault as Stevie says is with Virgin.

If you are only using the ethernet cable then you only need to browse the virgin installation disk and look for the relevant modem drivers (Scientific Atlanta 2000?), no need to bother with the rest of the crap they provide when it Autoruns.

IIRC from fresh you should be able to hook up the cable modem to the coax and power it up (Power and Cable lights show), run the ethernet cable from it to the PC network card (PC light will show),  explore the CD and install the modem drivers and when they are in you should immediately start to see the Send and Receive lights flash happily away.. tongue2

Btw is she running XP or Vista?

The NIC hasn't been set as static ip has it ? Meaning it wont change or assign.

Sounds obvious too but have you ran malware checkers ?

Virgin are adamant its not a fault their side.

PC is running XP

Where can I check NIC settings Keasy?

Wooster - Done all that already Sad

I also haven't run maleware sweep - could this really cause a problem?

He shouldn't need to install drivers if it's ethernet, at least i never have.

also, the nic won't have a static IP if it's getting assigned a 169.

Do you have a laptop or something you can try? If you do, power off the modem before you connect it to the laptop. Then when you hook up the laptop reboot the modem and see what happens.

just read initial post again

Stevie - Hard to explain...

I went into network properties/TCP IP/Settings and manually set an IP address (starting 80) and Subnet Mask (255 etc). Then rebooted the modem.

^This then displayed as 'Local Area Connection - Connected' but still no internet as IP had not been signed by ISP.

I then reset the IP back to Automatic and it reset back to starting 169. And said 'Limited or No connectivity'

Does that make sense?

I think I'm thinking of the quick way to install the USB drivers again..brain is fucked atm.. happy

A couple of thoughts..
Have you tried it with the USB cable too?
Is your Network Card working correctly (no errors showing in Device Manager)?
Have you tried using a different Network Cable?

btw here's anothe wee guide.. confused

That's what I was meaning Tom not an actual real static ip a self set ip, if you set a static ip or rather a manual ip address.

You have obtain ip automatically, have you made sure you have pressed the radio button for obtain DNS automatically ?

Have you tried accessing the cable modem direct and looking at it's log file and to see if is assigned an ethernet ip, a mac etc?

http://192.168.100.1/

is the address to enter it.

BTW shouldn't you ip assign itself a 192. address ?
169. is if the modem can not find an external network. so the problem is either their end or modem end.

Possible...

# Right click My Computer, and click Manage.
# Double click Services and Applications.
# Double click Services.
# Double click DHCP Client. If the Service status is Stopped, click Start.
# Set the Startup type to Automatic

---------------

Further rsearch dictates you have defo no external network so windows is assigning a 169 rather as a 192, the major culprit seems to be McAfee firewall, either going tits up or rather worryingly if it has been uninstalled. Shows what a pile of pish it is.
Apparently with no external network the ccable modem is tripping over itself or pishing its cyber pants over the mac address, it needs to be reprovisioned. That can't happen as they need access to the modem to do it as the modems are locked.
So the modem could also be a faulty one that they need to replace.

1) Yes - nothing!
2) Yes - I even talked my mum through re-installing driver this morning, nothing!
3) Yes

4) I have my old Virgin Media Modem at home, worth a try or would the MAC address be wrong?

Yes

No - Will try!

DHCP is on (Virgin Tech had me do the above)

iirc she uses Comodo Firewall.

Other than that im unsure what else to try Sad

Thanks all for your help though!

I think we are left with only two things now...either the modem is fucked (technical jargon) or there's a problem with the cable line itself.
Depending on the modem model, are the correct lights on? (The Cable light should be solid green, flashing means the line is down)

You can use that old modem you have at home mate without any problems, so I'd get that in asap and scratch another option off the list.  smile
