We got the Tawse ('the belt') It was harsh, and it was feared. I don't know anyone who thought they got the belt for no reason at some point in their life, but (imho) things started to go to hell on a handcart with kids when it was abolished. Sure it was harsh punishment, but it had the same effect as the first time you ever got burned. For better or worse, you realised that there was other ways to deal with things outside your immediate control. When you are brought up knowing authority can burn you, then you realise the power of the word and the vote.

I got the belt in primary 5 my first time so that made me what, seven, as I was a Christmas leaver.
Grown adults physically applying violence on seven year olds, uh uh, no ta.
It was sore and the teacher was a mean fecking bastard for giving me the belt, all I did was play with my Starsky and Hutch car when I should have been doing a maths book exercise, Lomond Logic it was called, that day is imprinted on memory.
Fecking out of order, it was bloody sore and the punishment most definitely did not fit the crime. I was terrified standing there waiting on it to happen, I mean physically shaking. All because she was frustrated and resorted to violence. I mean was it my fault her husband was probably screwing the missus next door or whatever shit was happening to her on a personal basis ?
The belt ?
Not ta, I'm glad it's gone, I don't want some fecking arsehole teacher whacking my kids, I don't even do that myself.
They need something more harsh than exclusion and expulsion but resorting top physically abusing children is not my idea of a way to go.

I'd bring it back, even though I hated it myself, just to see if it had a positive effect.
Just look at some of the shit that goes down in some of the worst areas.. I.E 9 year old kids trashing cars on estates night after night.
TBH it was rare that you got the belt for nothing..

I can see why folks want it back, but I don't want it.
Like I said, I deal with my kids behavior without resorting to whacking them, so I do not want anyone else hitting my kids.

That's you though, you are a good parent, There's lots of 'parents' out there who couldn't give a fuck about what their kids get up to. 'Ratboy' isn't a made up term, it reflects the environment they are brought up in.

This is true but tarring them all with the same punishment brush isn't fair.
and in all honesty I knew guys that were belted on an almost weekly basis and they grew up to be scuzz so it didn't really deter them at all.

I'm not talking about beating them sensless, for instance a seven yr old should be made to stand in the corner, or a smack on the hand with a ruler, as the get older the cane across the hand or the back of the legs....I agree with Woosty on this also, since it has been stopped in Oz kids behaviour (in general)is just spiraling out of control. We all (people our age) got it for something we didnt do at one time or another, but hey, it makes up for all the times we didnt get it for the things we got away with.... Kids are there to learn not fuck around and belt teachers, in Oz it's technically illegal to wack your own kids, fuck that, my kids are good mannered because they were taught the rules one way or another...

How 'bout this...a non-violent way to punish a kid is shame. http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,23174957-13762,00.html

TBH I find caning and belting to be incredibly ineffective against the levels of delinquency you guys seem to be talking about and tbh you guy's are a wee bit removed from what's required (imo) in regard to your of idea proportionate punishment. It's custodial sentencing that's required, caning and belting are for minor misdemeanor at school, not for major criminal activity like trying run a headmaster over with a car, that's attempted murder, and pointing guns at teachers heads at point blank is hardly worthy of six of the best, six months or years perhaps. And the fact of the matter still remains, I had teachers who were cunts, they had pupils they didn't like and would belt them at any given opportunity. Any level of violence against a minor is unacceptable, well young kids especially, tis a fine line, 14 yrs and up maybe nearing an age when it's not going to be so traumatic. But belting seven year olds is not on.
