Bloody Vikings they're all the same..kill kill kill...

Norwegian whalers shot the first whale of the season on Wednesday of a quota of 1,052, a group opposed to the hunts said.

Norway, with Japan the main whaling nation despite an international moratorium, resumed commercial hunts in 1993 and says that the minke whales it harpoons are plentiful in the north Atlantic.

"This morning, Norwegian whalers made the first kill of the season - a calf," the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) said in a statement. It said the whale was shot by the Jan Bjoern vessel.

Whalers were not immediately available for comment. The meat is typically consumed as steaks.

The WSPA said that a survey it carried out indicated that only one in four Norwegians under the age of 30 strongly supported the continuation of whaling.

The first whaling boats went out last week, according to the High North Alliance, which supports whalers. The whaling season off Norway stretches from April to August.

Norway isn't a member of the EU (they tap into the same North Sea oil wells as we do so they don't think they need to join yet) and wouldn't be allowed to hunt whales if they were.

In saying that, is their going to be a market for it in the same scale as Japan?
They could also be in for a harder time of it than the Japanese get..

Anyhoo, fact is we already know we are blighting this planet, and have been for a couple of centuries.
imho We need to draw lines that stick.  confused

We should ban all forms of commercial fishing and only eat seafood that is farmed.  We have the technology so why don't we use it.

When I was doing fisheries protection work in the sub antarctic waters I saw too much wastage and destruction to have any respect for commercial fishing.  It was nothing less than eco terrorism.

Yes, but farming runs into the same animal rights problems you do with and beef.  I've managed to maintain my diet without eating beef, but worry more and more that pigs, poultry, and fish aren't treated much better.

This fisherman caught a whale, I don't think you can farm whales, can you?

I think I'm turning vegetarian.  Go ahead show me the videos of dieing corn, broccoli, green beans and the rest, I know, pretty soon I won't be able to eat anything.

What's the big deal about anti whaling, I used think it wrong because I was told it was.

If they are plentiful then it's in Norway and Japans culture to whale.

No problemo to me, it's a beast not some icon of hippydom, unless they are endangered as claimed. But you don't see Norwegians and Japanese Greenpeace ships blocking our fishing fleets trawlers in the name of saving The Cod.
Ain't something I would try, had the chance when I was at a save the whale rally years ago when I thought it was the worst thing in the world to do to kill whale.
