With internet feeds it's all down to how fast the source can supply the video, usually they're optimised for the Web and at relatively low quality, but a popular video will still take a bit of time to cache if it has thousands of hits per hour going on.

You're ISP could very likely be throttling your bandwidth when hitting popular sites like you tube.

Also don't use realplayer as it sucketh.
Download the kazaa lite codec pack - http://www.free-codecs.com/download/k_lite_Mega_Codec_Pack.htm

They'll only throttle it if you hit your usage limit.
RealAlt etc. won't help, you'll still be throttled if you hit it.

Real alt etc is linked to cause it's better than real player.

And you really think some isp's don't throttle packets or packet shape from Youtube despite limits ?

C'mon, don't be so green.

Got any evidence?

I'd never heard of an ISP restricting access to Youtube, and I can't find any evidence that any do. confused

At the end of the day throwing codecs into the system isn't going to help the issue with YouTube.

No one said it would, it was merely a suggestion for a better player than realplayer.

As for evidence.
No.

But thats why google are developing a meter to determine if isp's are throttling specific sites.

I've seen some warnings about regarding the bigger codec packs, that was my concern. confused

Tbh..I've actually started using the official version of Quicktime, just to avoid the problems I ran into with QuicktimeAlt.. mellow

I might do the same with RealPlayer. I haven't ran into many .rm (.ram etc.) files tbh, but I remember the reason behind using the Alt software was because of the TSR issues with that and Quicktime when most people were on dial up.
That issue doesn't really apply these days imho.

Now that spyware is a commonly known issue I doubt real player would have it, but it used to install gator and hence it was a nasty piece of ferkin shit!

Plusi t's just crummy tbh, last I looked at it on a PC it was slow and cluncky.

As for Quick Alt I liie it as QT used to cause issues and was a tad over bearing, ie : tried to assume total control.

Well, it's very hard to prove; you cannnot tell its their or your end causing the problem, and whether its a load problem at the ISP, the your being throttled, or youtube is just being shit.

That said, Virgin Media execs have said they'd like to see an end to net neutrality so they could have people pay for guaranteed bandwidth but Virgin Media execs have been smoking something completely something batty for some time. They were complaining about Iplayer etc fairly recently.

I fired up a link in Tech Discussion today for an app that might have the potential to let us to see what our ISP's are doing...it's early days yet though. confused
