Obama wins 08 US election.....

Wow we've come a long way as a nation, just 40 years ago the thought of a black man being president of the United States would have been laughed at and most likely cursed. The youth of the nation was finally heard and there was no lingering racist hatred in their voice. A small part of a dream has been realized and maybe in another 40 years all of the dream will come to be realized. I think back over the last 18 months this election process has taken and I know it will be a second 40 years before all of the hate and prejudice (or most of it) will be gone. These last 18 month have seen my email filled with lies of "he's a Muslim", He's a Marxist/socialist, He will ruin the country and on and on and on - my 2 favorite by the way is "when he is president he will change the national anthem to we are the world" and him being accused of flying his own flag behind him during a speech - oh how that really pissed the sender of the email off, how dare he fly his flag...BTW the flag was the flag of the state of Ohio.

I voted for him and I'll never deny it. He has inherited a mess left behind by George W. A mess that reaches far beyond the boarders of the USA. The odds are stacked against him but luckily he has a democratic majority in congress and the senate - hopefully that majority control will give him the power base he needs to put right what has gone oh so wrong.

I wish him all the luck in the world because the world needs it.

Finally, the change we need.

Obama has to have big shoulders to bear the weight that will be put on him.

I've never been prouder to be an American.  In a Republican state, I've never been prouder of my minority vote.  This year, I don't even care that it didn't count.

The people have spoken, change has begun.

Yiiiippeeeee!

Wake up you Wankers, its a new world today!

Congrats.

Hopefully he won't feck up on his strategies for Afghanistan and Iraq.
Apparently both candidates had been meeting with the security councils to discuss strategies so a plan was in place the moment the were president elect. Leaving it to when they took office was apparently very ill advised.
Just hope he don't go getting all heavy handed on Pakistan's ass now  smile

Certainly historic for you guys having your fisrt son of a black parent as your head of state.
I remain cynical on the World stage until I see what he does, he is after all a politician and a master of the spin, I trust none of them and hope he does deliver though.

I'm pleased that this kind of change has finaly been possible and hopefully will be exemplary to other nations, not to instate a black man, but to instate the most competent of all the choices available.  Dont vote boobs, vote competent boobs .. or vote better boobs if the others are old and wrinkly

Obama has to have big shoulders to bear the weight that will be put on him.

but this is what I fear also ... people like to watch boobs especially if they are perfect at first sight, but soon the little defaults will show and hopefully people wont be put of ...

Historic indeed. Cool

I was thinking about what things were like only 40 years ago myself this morning when I turned on the news and saw he'd won. confused

As Simon Schama said this morning "it's taken a while, but America has finally lived up to Thomas Jefferson's words!"

 yay

except I'm nursing a mother of a hangover - took 1/2 of yesterday off and went the Uni bar that was hosting an election afternoon  tongue2

great symbolism and possibly the end of the monster years http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/11/05/the-monster-years/ and I'm hoping something real along the lines of green job investment (to rein in CO2 as well as good for their economy, and thus ours) and more accessible health care (16% of US GDP is in health care - it's crippling them, plus if the US stops giving truckloads of cash to insurance firms, Aus may think it's a bad idea to and reverse our recent dalliance with this rubbish of expensive healthcare)

hehe http://www.theonion.com/content/news_briefs/black_man_given_nations

edit: also very funny smile http://www.theonion.com/content/news/nation_finally_shitty_enough_to
