It certainly hits home. I can see some of those traits in myself.  It's been hard to believe in my government for a long time and that's very disheartening. Especially when the beast has as much momentum as it does.  You can sometimes see people go from "I can change the world" to "I can be part of change" past "I can see change being possible" to arrive at "Just leave me the fuck alone and I'll ride it out".  Let's hope the future is brighter and arrives without the historically neccessary times of pain and upheaval.

i'm apparently a moater then, apparently...

i dont honestly know what they are on about, everyone i know is. and considering i'm one of the older types of 'my generation' apparently, that says alot about how this idea is sorta bullshit, it's just everyone who is realistic is thinking that way these days. i think they've created a sub generation where none really exists, i'd imagine if they had their ex students back, they would be reacting the same way... it's certainly not a new thing for just turned 18 year old students etc.

besides, the next generations apparently started around 2000... my lot grew up 90's-00s's etc... maybe the new lot are starting to come through now, but really... it's not just them, it's my lot too :P

They probably give up too easily and expect life to be handed to them on a plate.

I believe the author is right and his observations are dead on. I myself have begun to live by the old X files motto of Trust No One. Sure there are a few exceptions but the lying shit bags that have ran the country (USA) for the last eight years are not even anywhere close to being trust worthy - in any aspect. Trust a corporation? Hell no they are just as bad as the aforementioned shit bags. Trust the clergy? - Are you kidding? lock your children up that priest looks horny. oh and their holy roller attitudes of what is right and wrong is a joke especially if you realize that one by one all of them are falling into disgrace....hookers, drugs, stealing money etc etc

Its no wonder the kids don't want to do service in the military - they are embarrassed by their government and the criminal actions it has taken, but that is only a partial reason because the writer was also right when he said they were spoiled and expected everything to be handed to them. I see the younger generation wanting the best of everything but not willing to put in the effort to get there.

The older generations are just as fucked up. The late 50's and those up into their 70's and beyond believe the government will do no wrong and if your not going to church your a bad person.

/rant - pain pill is kicking in and I want to sleep.

Hey, welcome to the real world man! tongue2

Ever wondered why us Europeans are such cynical bastards?  happy
It's because we limp from one crisis to the next, time after time, after time!

Shit! We can barely manage a century without a major war!  laugh (Putin is sizing himself up a the next Stalin already), but that's beside the point..you can't just fucking give up (like some kids these days seem to be doing)..keep hammering at the bastards...after all, they're only there at your sufferance. (so keep on ranting, it's good for the cause!*)  Wink

This wine that I'm drinking..

I am totaly aware we from Europe have a mindset like discribed in the article but the point he's on about it's apparently just now showing up in America on a large scale of that generation.  So I was wondering if our friendly neighbours from America could confirm this change.

that seems to be a difference already.  Most of the older members here, like you still seem to get up in a rut about causes ...  even I from an older generation compared to the article's target have become to cynical and selfcentered to truely care about all that's happening around me ...

To be honest, i feel this country is beyond my doing to be able to actually fix, so why care about it. Plus every chance it gets it finds a new way to fuck me over.

Since events of company sale going through, i should have a fair bit of wonga on the way over the next few years. Few pay rises, bit of saving and sorting out this last bit of debt and i could feasibly go to Aus with £20k, with only student loan here left to pay off.

There's nearly nothing keeping me here, just family and friends, i doubt 2 years is gonna change any of that.

What's to say you'll feel any different anywhere else?

25 years ago we were at the height of Thatcherite misery, industries shutting down left right and centre, over three million on the dole and the UK generally in a far, far shittier state than it is today.
In pockets all over the UK people started to turn on the Tories, and it took us until 1997 to kick the last one out in Scotland.
So it might take a while, but change is always possible. Wink

btw, you might think that the current crop of Labour politicians are bad (I'm not disputing that they are a bit inept at times), but they're pussy cats compared to the Tories at their worst.
Ask yourself, when was the last time you saw widespread rioting in the streets? laugh

Norman Lamont - "My father was out of work, he didn't riot. He got on his bike and found a job".

One of the dumbest quotes in British political history imo.
I'm quite sure Norman (I like Julian Clary's fist up my arse) Lamonts father didn't loose his job because some evil Tory fecker decided to close his traditional industry sector down as they didn't see it fitting in with their idea of a modern Britain, despite the fact that industry was breaking all profit and production records and considered the best steel in The World at the time. I bet his father losing his job didn't equate to an entire community being dealt the death sentence in the interest of modernisation and cheaper imported coals, yes cheap coal was far more important than entire communities, in saying that they were just scummy working class miner  communities, so that was fair game, wasn't it Norman ?

Yes, Norman, I'm quite sure your father lost his job because he like you enjoyed a good fisting and was caught fist up arse while he was supposed to be doing his work.

As you can see, I'm no lover of the Thatcherite tories and little time for the Cameron era either.

What I see is kids seeing a lack of leadership at the presidential level. They don't see someone who they trust and inspires them to do. I think that's why the record turn out of young voters happened. They see someone they think they can trust who will lead them and the govt to change. I think the article was a little shallow in denying the belief in the kids to respond to change positively. Nothing new in that. I think(I hope) the kids shake off their lethargy and respond to the challenge with the belief they showed in the new govt. It's happened before. I think their attitude may evolve into "watch the bastards like a hawk" and continue to participate at the level they've showed for the election. Only time will tell, but I think this belief in the moat theory is a cynical view from a 60's child. Wink
