The new Worm has a tendency to shut computers down at random, was doing it to most of them in college this week.

Not a lot to go on.

Does it actually crash shut when you're on it or just reporting a recovery ?
It could be something to do with a closing process.

I don't know where event viewer is in Vista but if you can do a google for vista event viewer then post up what it says and maybe one of the vista chumps will know what's going on.

I googled for you.

To get started, click on the Vista Start button, then in the 'Start Search' box type just three letters: eve.  Observe how the larger dialog box displays: 'Programs' and underneath: 'Event Viewer'.  Click on 'Event Viewer'.

The only articles I can find on it are one relating to USB devices and removing them.
http://www.vistax64.com/vista-general/182308-how-do-i-fix-vista-wmi-eventid-10-problem.html

And another saying it's related to the Optical drive and a problem with it's registry entry.

I've just been reading through all of this.....
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc727148.aspx

So I'm not alone with this problem....I now have 999 error massages in the event viewer!!! Is this normal on a week old PC or should I think about returning it to PC World..??

Will they view this as a minor inconvenience..Huh??

Any ideas.......Huh??

To be honest I'd probably be looking at cloning the drive and making a backup to DVD, formatting the lot and installing XP SP3 on it.

If anything goes seriously wrong in future, use the backups to restore Vista on it and ship it back to them.

Either that or 'demand'* that they install an OS (XP) on it that's fit for purpose.

*probably onto plums with that tbh...it'll be like asking them to cut one of their nuts off. confused

So in a nut shell if I that this unit back tomorrow & they agree to exchange it for another of any make/model, if it has Vista as it's OS then the new system can be as bad as this one....... ohmy

Yes.

The majority of calls to DELL's support desk pre-Vista was malware related, within 6 months it was almost exclusively Vista related.  Wink

I suppose that's what we get for relying on a virtual monopoly. Wink

Well, it depends if it's a straight copy of XP or one of them restore discs.  Coming from a pre built manufacturer it may be a version with drivers for specific chipsets etc ? I dunno tbh, I 've never owned a prebuilt system and never had to do a reinstall on a professional level.

Grab a hooky copy I can give yo a great key Wink

On Vista...

I don't actually blame M$ but the big manufacturers for churning systems out that they build and know the hardware inside has problems with shipped OS. They should be fixing it, not relying on a broad spectrum aspect of multi functionality. We would be as well going back ti ISA and legacy compatability with lazy arsed manufacturers like that.

I'm with Wooster, there is obviously a hardware issue with the pc. One or more of its components doesn't play nice. I know of quite a few people who have had no issues with Vista and a few who had issues but were mostly hardware incompatibilities. IMO, I would take it back and ask for one that no issues. You shouldn't have any issues with a week old pc.
