I think x64 is only available on the server edition. Tbh I don't think that x64 would give you much over x86 on a desktop environment and the compatible apps list could be pretty short as well. 9.10 is the latest release. It doesn't work on a PS3 though (as it took me six hours to find out yesterday) due to it using the ext4 filesystem..you need to use 9.04 which uses ext3 (which is closer to the native filesystem of the PS3).

Found a CD to get started (you should see it, it's mockit, I'm surprised it worked).
Fail right away, doesn't see my wireless adaptor and I can't find any linux drivers for it.
Ach weel.
Maybe when I'm back out in the cabin when spring eventualy comes and I'm hardwired again I will mess about with it.

The old version detected mine on my laptops right away. (They're both Intel's though)
You might be able to find who manufactured the chip inside it without breaking it open and using the appropriate driver manually.

Having spent a fucking age trying to get a Wireless Adapter to work on Linux (because Netgear won't write a x64 Linux Driver)... I'd heartily recommend not bothering trying to get Linux to work on Wireless without native drivers....my WG311v3 is 'compatible' only if I use ndiswrapper, to install, and run a x64 version of the Windows XP 64 Driver... you know what. It just doesn't work.
There should have been an x64 version of 8.04 for Desktops, it was just hidden at last look... though, there should be 08.10, 09.04, 09.10 versions... I'm fairly certain a flavour has been around for a while for amd64.
-edit-
06.06 has amd64 support =)

Nothing, just noticed your post saying about x64 being server only... amd64 releases go back to at least 2006 =)
We use 10.10 x64 on one of our app servers, and are moving to it for the web servers when we virtualise them. I use 10.10 x64 on my home server too =]
For persistent USB, I'd frankly use the 32bit version though since it'll likely work on more machines via back compatibility....
I actually used to use a think called Portable Ubuntu on my old work desktop, can't get it on run on this without initial runs of admin rights, which is a bit annoying (I like the Ubuntu Terminal). It runs Co-linux, which... is great... it runs co-operatively within Windows to make calls to the system, without deadlocking, so you can run Linux in Windows. Very good. Been trying to get it to run at home, taken about four hours to find out that Portable Ubuntu makes such low level calls, that it hooks directly to the kernel.
Only problem is, it only supports 32bit Windows Kernels and they are taking their time to port it over =[
With x64 and Linux, the compatible apps list is pretty much identical. You might need to "sudo apt-get update" before you do though, mine couldn't find things properly in the Universes until I did that, even things like Tar and Zip. Since most things are Open Source on it, someones normally hacked away the x64 compatible version, or you can just compile it to work anyway...but the major players for using it, like Firefox etc will be there.

First time I've read this post, how silly of me. Both these will be very useful (Linux and XP USB boot). Thanks Wooster.

You can bung Win7 onto a bootable USB as well now. And Boomsling linked to this alternative to Ubuntu as well. http://www.slax.org/ Looks pretty nifty.
