My hubby Bruce for the past two years has had an extremely sore neck and shoulders,he has been through all the painkilling stuff, like excercise and painkillers and all that sort of thing.
Well finally at the start of the year he was sent to a neurologist, and was given an MRI scan.
They found that he has Cervical Spinal Stenosis, which basically means that at disks 4 and 5 (I think)his spine is narrowing and squeezing the nerves.Thats just at the back of his neck not far under the base of the skull.(This is a condition that usually only affects men from 65 up,Bruce is 37)It was caused by an accident at work but cos he didnt log it in the accident book Pepsico take no responsibilty for it.
Anyway he was told his options are to either get an operation or not,but if he didnt get one there was a possibilty he could end up in a wheelchair,so he decided to go with the op.He doesnt seem too bothered about it,I on the other hand am absolutely petrified.
His operation entails them going in through the front of his neck beside his voice box and then to the back of the neck, where they will remove the bone and replace it with either a calcium cage or a metal one. This is a very tricky procedure and there are lots of things coiuld go wrong, even if everything goes smoothly it could take him up to 6 months to recover and there is no guarantee he wont have the same condition back in 5 years.
Has anyone else has this operation? I cant remember its full title, its something like anterior cercival microdiscectomy with fusion.
Anyway wish him luck cos I dont know what I would do without him.
I was going to take him on holiday to celebrate our 13th wedding anniversary in October, but the hospital say his op will def be this year,so I have moved the date of the holiday up to the end of this month.

I wish you both all the luck in the world!  Hope it all turns out well and I'm shure he is as petrified as you are but just does not show it...

Good luck to you and Bruce. My Yankee survived a quadruple bypass 2 years ago and I was stunned by the medical procedures and care that was available to him. I am certain that Bruce will be fine. smile

My best wishes to Bruce, Sugar.  Cool

A mate of mines mum went through what I can only imagine is a very similar procedure to reinforce vertebra on her neck that were badly affected by arthritis.
She came through it without any major hassle and her voice box definitely wasn't affected in the slightest (the woman can conduct a full argument in microseconds.. tongue2).

PM Thermal.  I think his mom had this same procedure.  Like your husband she was younger than 65.  She had it done a couple of years ago.  She doesn't have pain anymore but she doesn't have full range of motion.  She was in a neck brace for quite a while.  She's happy she had it done though.  He might know more than I do about the ins and outs.  I hope your husband does well and that there are no complications.  Best wishes.
