I'd avoid 3 Mobile like the plague if you plan on using it in the wilds of Scotland, I've heard that they have about the worst coverage of the lot.
McDonalds have free wireless internet through The Cloud network (we fitted the wireless kit..

).
They use Cisco 1241 AP's and the range is usually enough to extend to the car park.
So all you need to do is scan for wireless networks outside or inside a McD's and you should see the 'The Cloud' in the SSID list.
Connect to that and it'll take you to the main landing page where you can 'Log In'..you don't need to log in iirc, just start Googling and you'll find that you are on the net anyway.

In the early phase of the rollout, you had to pay.
But I think McD's realised, quite rightly, that if they offered it up for free then they'd generate some sales through it.
I use the McD's on the A9 near Dunkeld regularly, to check my emails when I'm on the road.
