Is the PC wired to the router?
The only time it should ask for a Username and Password is when you are trying to log onto the routers control panel. These are usually defaults until changed, the details of which are in the manual. i.e. Username:cisco, Password:Cisco
If it's wireless then it would only ask for a password (twice) in order to establish a connection.

A wired connection doesn't usually require a username and password to get onto the internet, the only time you would see this is if you were trying to access files on another PC which does have a username and password.

I've been on the main PC all morning with no problem so I don't see why now it needs a password..... There is a free toll number that came with the router so I may give them a ring....I hate using this LP.....

O.k so I've got the PC back on line by going back to a restore point a month ago but what should I do about the router..... Should I have another go at installing it..?? Will it just do the same thing again...?

You did set up encryption on the wireless side, didn't you?

The problem isn't with the router, it's working fine. The PC seems to be the problem (if it wasn't, then the restore point wouldn't have made any difference). Encryption: WPA, WPA2, WEP, that kind of thing. When you wirelessly connected the Laptop it should have asked you to enter a password and then to confirm the password. If it didn;t then you have no encryption running and anyone can connect to it. To make matters worse, not having any account passwords on your main PC means that anyone could roam through that and change anything they like on it. (including usernames and passwords)

WPA, WPA2, WEP don't remember any of that but we did set a password.....I think No I'm sure we set one as it was on the install guide. I'll start again & see what happens it's more than likely it's something I've done to feck it up....

Chances are it was mate. What you need to do on the PC though, is set your own passwords on your own account and the Administrator account, because it sounds like someone has got in and done that at some point. If you do it, it means it makes it extremely difficult for anyone else to do it.

OK I've reset the admin password on this & I'd do the laptop in a mo.....I've re setup the router & it's the same.... It's not asking for a password any more but when I disconnect it it will not run the inter web..... Windows can't find a network for some reason...

The router should be set up to assign IP addresses via DHCP and the network card on your PC should be set to automatically assign an IP.
Are you running any software that would block IP addresses (Firewall, PeerGuardian etc..)?

I think you need to restart the modem, then start the router. Doing that will force the modem to be assigned a new IP and then your router will ask for an IP, which will be supplied by the modem. If you do evrything in the following order, it may resolve the problem. Shut down your PC, unplug your modem and router. After everything is off, plug in the modem first, then the router and finally restart your PC. That should fix your problem. After all that, you need to make sure your wireless encryption is up and running. It shouldn't change just unplugging the router, but double check to make sure. What brand of router?
