Time we had a fairer system of Cheques/checks and Balances between the two houses like the Americans have.

Careful what you wish for. Our 2 party system does work but the "side effects" can kill you  laugh

an exaggerated example:

Party "A" drafts a bill that says "All school buses must have working brakes" - that's a no brainer right? Not so fast, because party "B" adds 20 rider bills to the original bill that appropriates money or would set new laws that couldn't pass on their own merit and if the original bill is strong enough those ridiculous rider bills get passed.

You also end up with an incredible amount of in fighting that leads to some really silly shit. I know you guys have the same type of thing there but our system allows it to go to the extreme.

It could become a moot point for us though, if Scotland decides to push for independence.

Feckin SNP bringing that wan up again.

They ain't going to be happy until they get their way.

They seem to forget they're a minority government making deals with UK parties. I don't think Scotland will push for independence. Each time it comes back A-NON.
It's the SNP that wants to push a referendum.

I'm looking at the long term.
Who knows what the sentiment might be next year, in ten years, or in twenty years.

I read this last week (the headline grabbed my attention).
I'm not too sure about how common this attitude is (I don't entirely disagree with it btw, it's fair play), but I don't think that it's that uncommon.

Good read that.

Quote from: Telegraph
First, a semi-detached part of the United Kingdom that Labour has progressively driven towards independence since 1997 wishes not to be ruled by Westminster but is happy to take (at least) £22 billion in subsidy each year

Then there is websites like this...
http://www.oilofscotland.org/scottish_north_sea_oil.html

Quote
Scottish Oil is worth £22,831 a minute, £32 million a day, £12 billion a year
So that mean a sub of only really 10 billion.
Which isn't much to have final governing rule and say over a country that has its own laws, cultures and mind set different to that of the country it's ruling house is based in.

Still ain't for the inde road though  laugh

Not uncommon at all, especially with people around university age... personally... i think it's a crock of shit Scottish students get free education, whilst English and Welsh don't...  told by a Scottish Born PM, and a Scottish Exchequor we mere English cannot afford it...  there is, frankly an attitude around that says 'eh? why if Scotland can't fund itself can it do expensive things?'

And i know this might cause some offence, but why Scotland thinks it is a massive deal anyway is slightly beyond me... Scotlands total population is 20% less than that of London. If Scotland wants it's own laws, taxations, benefits etc, it should be totally self governing.

I think the general attitude towards Scotland in England has not been helped by a Scottish Ex PM (essentially) and a current Scottish PM, the latters only saving grace is that he won't make it past the next election...

I found out today that the 'assumption' for energy is that it'll be used in the SE of England.
The upshot of this is (under conditions set for conventional power plants) that our renewable energy sources are hit with penalty charges that make them 10 times more expensive than a coal burner in the south.
The only recourse we've been left with is to take OFGEM to the European Courts in order to make them drop the charges.

That kind of shit makes my blood boil.

So you're saying Scotland is not a big enough deal to have affairs in non Scotland issues involving English only politics ?

If that is the case, then yeah, I do agree. A devolved English government is okay by me.

If you're just saying we just ain;t that big a deal, then die southern puff  Tongue orly
