Going through Star Wars blu rays and the original trilogy epsiodes iv to vi.  So far tranfsers are very good and even the creatures/special effects hold up very, very well.  Pleasantly suprised.

Man, I am so jealous. I have them all on tape and some on Dvd. I would love them on BR. That would mean buying them all again, again, again; but I'm guessing it would be worth it.

I reckon if you bought them once in one format (the DVD's were digitally remastered iirc) then you're entitled to download them in another (equal quality) format.

I'd say it was fair use.
Shit I've bought some albums twice over the years, I'll be fucked if I'm going to pay for them again in MP3 format (or be arsed ripping them from CD).  happy

Yeah in fairness though, these blu rays are not just a straight transfer from the remastered dvd's are they.  The sound and picture has been "restored" and processed beyond the transfer quality of the dvd's.  Infact even some of the actual film content has been altered, albeit to much critism (for me its a neglible alteration of content)

Point being is some clever teckies have spent time/resource on the blu rays.  As for download, if you wanted the quailty on par with the blu rays, you're looking at 30gb+ per film.  Unless you're going to go for some compressed, sub full HD resolution and 6.1 DTS HD Master soundtrack compromise.

In short I wont object to buying the other 3 epsisodes.  Not when the transfers have had some effort put into them.  I sold the dvd's I had.  I only object to rebuying films when the blu ray quality is barely a step up - but thats not the norm thankfully.

Newsgroups most probably.

Tbh I can't see any difference in quality between an x264 mkv rip @ around 9GB in size (most have 5.1 sound) and Blu-Ray.
Maybe it's to do with compatibility, in that the extra bitrate on the disk is there to take the load off a range of players, whereas most people viewing a rip will be doing it through a PC/HTPC/NetTop/Laptop with more grunt than most dedicated players.

I dunno, never looked into it, just going on what on the MkI Eyeball tells me.  smile

Strange, for me theres a very noticeable difference on 720p mkv downloads and a noticeable one on 1080p mkv's.  But not only visually but also sound wise. Its very rare that its a decent HD Master soundtrack.

However you're talking to someone here who bought dedicated blu ray players as they provide even better visual quality than any media PC can give.  Both Cyberlink and Arcsoft play a very nice quality blu ray picture, but its just not as good as a £200+ dedicated blu ray player, which in turn are a step up from a PS3.

Bare in mind sound wise I'm running through a latest spec A/V receiver, full szie 5.1 seperates and a 46" LED panel which is decent enough to highlight differences to me.

Just got around to watching Super (it was delayed a bit due to Kick Ass coming out)...it's nuts.  Cool

Also Tin Tin is excellent, Hugo not so excellent (for some reason the word 'clunky' sprung to mind). confused
