It's a shame that there is a debate to have.  It seems to me that health care should be a right.  In a country where we have so many rights, the right to health is low on the totem pole.  It's something to be argued about in Congress, fought about in the bars and streets.   I am lucky that I have a job that provides health insurance.  I'm lucky to have a job period.  I can't really afford the $3000 deductible, but I know that if I get sick or hurt, I have a minimum of $3000 I have to pay out of my pocket.  Is that less than the taxes per year I'd pay for National Healthcare?  IDK...  But if we go to a single payor system I will be out of a job.  It's just not the American way to have a Socialist system.  Although, I do think that it is the best option when it comes to taking care of people in need.  What to do, what to do.... flee

I just don't want to see my employees, my parents, my other relatives deciding that they can't afford to take care of themselves any longer.  ntm sharing meds bought from Mexico, or prescribed for one individual and shared with others.  It's so sad.  Our own daughter's acne meds cost $350 USD that's ridiculous.  For clear skin?  Was it worth it for us or her?  Yes, but why would a tube of antibiotic cream and a can of foam cost that much?  Because, it can...   pinch

It's sorta socialist but the word socialist carries un-fair weight in the US?

The legacy of McCarthy and his witch hunts lives on I fear, to the detriment of millions who can't afford health care all because the word socialism is painted as the bogey man threatning the American way, The only thing it threatens is big monied fat cat arse holes IMO  laugh

US schools are run under a socialist system iirc, so you could use that to draw a comparison.

Yes, the schools are socialist, as well as healthcare for the poor, elderly, and severely ill, and the military as well.  But, you won't get a Republican to blink an eye at that.  In their eyes national healthcare is the first step down the slippery slope to communism.  It's ridiculous.

Its a shame our friends at TOP don't read this, then they could see what could happen to the UKs NHS. Don't say it won't happen, dentistry is already 75% down that road mad

I knew it.
It's Gi Me Beer.

And stop complaining.
It's your own damn fault that you can't express your opinion in a convincing way and that you get flustered, wet yourself and then leave.

you're right Wooster, I'm a dumb arse. I just hope I don't have to wait 2 weeks for an x-ray; or get a doctor that just doesn't give a damn because he/she is under paid and over worked (or not educated enough to diagnose me)...

What Keasy said.  This isn't true.  My cousin is a doctor.  Doctors are doctors and whether private or NHS have to train as long as each other.  You all train together in Uni then decide if you want to go private or not.

Isn't it better to have a NHS type system and then have the choice.  We have the choice, NHS or private.  You don't.  You only have private and have to pay through the nose for it.  Obama's idea is great but seems they've cocked it up a bit because it's forcing insurance on everyone as far as I can tell.  But some people can't afford the insurance.  Free health care for all is how it should be, you just pay a little bit more tax.

I had a minor op on my leg.  I got treated so nicely.  All for free.  I gave the nurses and female doctor boxes of roses after it was all over as a thank you.  A few months later I got a letter thanking me for the roses from the hospital.

It's worrying that so many American's believe what Mouse has said about the NHS.  And this is why they are so against the change.  Even worse when a paper or network said Stephen Hawkins would of died if he'd been cared for by the NHS smile thinking he was American because of his voice box smile
