Winter is coming!

« on: February 13, 2010, 11:04:31 AM »

I've been experimenting with converting MKV files to watchable media on my telly and my 360. So mainly WMVHD has been the goal.

Every method I've tried and proggy I've used has resulted in choppy conversions with lip sync issues.
Recently I've been using different progs to convert to avi HD and initial results looked promising. Still choppy and out of synch but the fact my TV that plays avi via its USB port was displaying avi in HD was a start. Very choppy, but tried it on the 360, less choppy. No updates required, sees the file as an avi and plays it in almost HD quality. So the processing poqwer of the 360 compared to the telly certainly made a difference.

So anyhoo, I'm thinking avi HD is sure coming on and tottered off to find more stuff to try.
Then I thought about the old DivX, sure enough gave it a try.
It uses MKV off the bat and converted the same file I use to benchmark right away to 720p. The option for 1080p etc and other resolutions are there, but my file was a 720p so I left it at that.
Bunged it in the tV first as if the telly plays it I don't need the 360 burning up leccy too. Didn;t even recognise the file.
No worries.
Bungs it in the 360 and lo and behold I have a brilliant HD conversion from MKV to to DivX HD that is recognised straight away from the 360, requires no updates and is smooth, no chopiness (yet) and no synch issues (yet).

Could it be I can now use all my MKV files and watch them on my big telly instead of the PC or down grading them to SD formats ?

Looks good so far  yay

LOL

Dunno yet if it needs broken up.

I've only done a 1.7 GB. I use a smallish file to see if it's going to be choppy or not as my benchmark.

I'm on a full sized conversion just now to see  Wink
