This one really has be baffled.
Win loads just fine, but after about 1 min of activity the desktop freezes. Keyboard and mouse are ok and the only window I can open is task manager.
Changed memory several times. Updated graphic drivers. Tried another psu, cleaned cpu heatsink which brought temp down from 88 to45c.
The install is a 'pirate' copy of Win UE. (most are over here).
The only hint I've found is when booting to PM8 cd and I've found that the p[artition is improperly mounted.
Even a 'repair' install didn't solve it. I'm tempted to zero the disk and start again.
 scratchhead

and yes, I've Googled this one

Something about non existent network drives springs to mind...vaguely.
Have you tried creating a new profile in Safe Mode and booting into that? (Sometimes they become corrupted and freeze the desktop)

Run msconfig before it freezes and have a look at what programs load at start up, tbh it could be a load of things from hardware to software. Try running a registry fixer before it freezes it may just fix it. I had a laptop the other night to fix, it had a bugger of a rogue antispyware on it. I had 10 seconds from the start screen to get into the task manager then applications, find it, and stop it running before it locked everthing up again. What a bastard. Angry It took me 3 hours to work that one out..  laugh Personal protector it was called.

Just a quick one if you cant load any checking programs on it, strip the hard drive out and run it as a slave on another system and check it that way. It may be bugged up.

Thanks lads.
I did everything you suggested here and in the end got sick and tired of banging my head. Too many man hours.
Backed up his data, wiped the disk and reinstalled.
Problem gone.

I generally start to consider a clean or repair install after 40 minutes on a PC..far less hassle.

A better app to use for that kind of thing is Process Explorer http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx

It's Task Managers big brother. Wink
One handy aspect of it regarding malware, is that you can suspend the rogue process instead of killing it...which in most cases is a trigger for it to start up again, hogging the CPU.
If you suspend it, you can hit it from it's blind spot. Cool

Supending it was what i did, then removed it with Malwarebytes and eset 32. Supending it allowed me to load these programs on to windows, the little bastard, stopped you loading removing anything. pdf exe. i think it was, by stopping this, i could then remove the rest of it. smile It now runs a treat.

Thanks for that link i might use that. Cheers Wink
