A format wipes everything off the drive, so yes, you'll have to reinstall 7 (and every other program you use).

Bear in mind you'll also lose any documents, pictures, media etc on the drive you format. So make sure you make backups or move them to another drive.
(It's worth spending a bit of time on this..for instance, do you know all your online passwords?)

If you use Firefox, you can backup your profile to a usb drive using MozBackup http://mozbackup.jasnapaka.com/

This might be useful.

I personally use Xmarks on firefox it backs up your bookmarks and passwords very handy indeed.
but as woosty said EVERYTHING will be wiped I find www.filehippo.com good for getting all those  free progs that are handy to have when reinstalling everything

Thanks both...everything I need has been moved on to the ex drive just never had to reinstall windows after a format. Is that because it was installed from disk instead of coming with the PC scratchhead

It makes no difference if it's pre-installed or from disk, it all gets wiped regardless.
What you might have found with some PC's that came with it pre-installed, is that a utility kicks in when no OS is found and it recovers/installs it from a partition on the drive without you having to do very much. Wink
