There seem to be mixed feelings about it on the web.

It did really well on Q1's AV Comparitives test and gets an Advanced+ rating (It's joint 3rd place with Kaspersky).

I've just replaced AVG Free 9.0 with MSE and contrary to some reports, it hasn't slowed my system down at all.
Lets see how it protects.

It seems that way to start with, or it did with me. When gaming though there are issues. Even with it's silent gaming mode switched on. If you disable the network scanning etc infact everything bar the actual live virus you will notice an improvement in gaming, well online gaming I should add. |

So are most though that game.
The thing is not the speed of the PC it's the inspection of network packets and it will cause slowdown regardless of the spec. It may be the time scale of micro but in delay terms of gaming those packets are being scanned slowly and the p2p shield etc adds more time.
Just use the AV shield and nothing else when gaming. Besides it's all a bit overkill and more for the casual user, IMO of course.
Anyway I'm a knob as I've just realised that we're talking AVG free, I thought it was AVAST. AVG free is a bit poor these days from what I can gather. Avira or AVAST are two best freebies or MSE surely ?

I haven't used a software firewall in years. I find a hardware firewall works much better. The only reason I would need a software firewall is to keep programs in and as long as I keep my system clean, I'm OK. The occasional look @ router traffic is enough for me. |

I always felt AVG Free (v9.0) was a halfway measure really, simply as it's free. I also used to get too many false positives.
So far I'm very happy with MSE on my setup.
Win 7 Pro x64 btw.

People can get very emotional about av's for some reason. But for me when I tested MSE, I found it could and would slow down windows explorer at times if you have realtime enabled. I found that to be true in Vista 32bit, 64 bit and 7 64bit.
Neither Avira or Avast do that so are better choices for me if going free, but you may find false positives are more likely.
Personally, I use the premium paid for version of Avira... no performance impact, great swift resolution update for any false positives and proven continual top tier protection record.

Tbh, I haven't used an anti virus programme in a while.
Never bother with firewalls, really. Router is about the best I get on that front
I might renew my NOD license at some point though, but tbh I haven't downloaded anything that.... say... needs scanning.. in a while, nor do I use a browser that gets attacked really, it's not popular enough.
Admittedly, both bad reasons for not having an AV but I never actually got any viruses in the six years I ran NOD either.

Yeah I'd agree, but Avira has stopped once or twice dodgy site happenings when I've browsed off the beaten track - probably only once or twice in past couple of years though.
