Wikipedia (granted) just said the 580 was only 1.6 teraflops though. I think there is something about the ATI Architecture that lends itself towards GPGPU stuff... all the SETI lot have always preferred ATI.

Umm, I buy the card to run games and it does that quicker and quieter than the ATi single GPU stuff at present. Thats all I care about tbh

Oh, no of course... so do I! It's just an interesting that a much faster card can be much slower in certain things =] Focus, I guess =]
But it's still impressive none the less that we can put a desktop part in a PC and get a Supercomputer from ten years ago. It won't stay like that... it'll just increase now... in 2020 don't expect to have a PC that is as fast as a super computer now.. there was quite a jump when GPGPU stuff came in to bit server farms from memory!

Whatever happened to intel and its ray tracing direction things were meant to move in? Labrrabee iirc.... rumour has it summer this year. But then rumour also says its 2 to 4 times faster than current GPU tech.... pinch of salt mi thinks.

Yep, makes alot of sense when you see it in those kind of terms... and why anti virus companies want to start using the power of GPU. I mean, for a start... wouldn't it be handy if you could schedule AV on the GPU and not lose resource from the CPU!
Makes a lot of sense. It's an uber computer inside a 'normal' computer that spends most of it's time idle.

A 580 is a bit slower than 2 x 5870's...
Wonder how fast it will go with two of them

Two to four times by cramming 2 or 4 GPU's onto a board and making them work more serial than parallel?

Larrabee has been canned though -> http://www.anandtech.com/show/35926990 out of interest is 5.1 Teraflops. 7 teraflops would have got your a IBM supercomputer (peak anyway), in 2000... today our fastest Supercomputer is 2.5 petaflops.... if we keep about the same speed (since 1990 the rates slightly increased)... we could be looking at close to the first Exaflop computer in 2020.

Shame, a 3rd GPU manufacturer could have been good....
