My PS3 wont start. It just says.....cannot find the correct hard drive. Is it fixable without losing the saved games and stuff?

That sounds to me as if the HDD has packed in. Either that or the cable has came loose.

Sounds like it has found a hard drive just not the 'correct' hard drive.
Have your PS3 updated lately ? I'm not scaremongering but I'm merely wondering if Sony have eventually started locking original hard drives to original mainboards.

Maybe I haven't screwed it back in right. Could also be down to the 3.42 firmware update (as Keasy mentioned), that release fixed the security issues surrounding the release of Jailbreak USB drives and the ability to play backed up games. The contents of the drive are encrypted for the individual machines they are installed in, so something might have gone pear shaped there with the update.

The Jailbreak drives are meant to be updateable, but it might depend on the chip used (looks like there might be some cheap clones out there). No word on whether they've released an update to fix the 3.42 firmware release so far (haven't looked for a couple of days though).
..
Btw Bopper, did Lee fit a bigger drive to that PS3?

Wooster....no... its the original drive. It was workin fine. Tried to start it up for a wee game of RDR before the fitba and got that fore mentioned wordage. Have looked through various PS3 forums..Yahoo answers and the like..... It is not a uncommon problem, with no definate answer. Some suggest takin out the HD and give it a clean....others say....bring up the bios screen and re format. Ive tried that....cant do it. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All you need is a philips screwdriver and two minutes of spare time. Pop that plastic cover off, undo the screw, slide the metal plate back and the drive lifts out. A couple of bottles of wine to do that would be an hourly rate higher than Tiger Woods was getting when he was on top of his game.

Hard drive is dead mate. Sounds like a head crash right enough. You are looking for any of the 5400RPM drives on this page here.. http://www.ebuyer.com/search?sort=popularity&store=2&cat=392&subcat=3263&limit=10&page=1(I take people have found the top one doesn't give you much trouble in a PS3 )
