The 'undisputed' facts are that he was facing extradition to face charges in Sweden and the bail was set at £240,000.

What was claimed earlier was that he'd manipulated this process himself in order to gain publicity. (imho ridiculous)

What you two are currently doing is going off on a tangent and using extremely spurious claims (by yourselves) in order to back up other, equally spurious claims.

From what I've read in the last few posts, it's a wonder you haven't placed the blame on Fidel Castro given the flights of fancy we've been treated to.

Huh  scratchhead  All I was doing was showing you how stupid the claims that the CIA had set him up with this rape charge were.

The CIA link was plainly stated to be an allegation. (at least by myself, I can't claim to have read every post on every forum)

Basing an argument on one shaky foundation ain't a great idea.  Wink

The reason you restated that unproven allegation was to discredit anyone who made a statement in opposition to Assange. You attempted to cast the governments and their agecies as intimidating bullies rather than to use proven facts and the reason you did this is because there are no facts to prove that he is being unfairly treated by any government.

My argument did have a shaky foundation but then this whole affair (other than the released documents) is light on facts and large on rhetoric.

Manipulated the courts? Who said that. Not me. I do think he was using the press to further his cause and he got more than he bargained for. Did he not? Wink

What claims? That Assange is an asshat who has leaked documents he had no right or privilege to? Damn, right. They weren't his documents and they weren't John Q. Fecking Publics either. They were between the US, diplomats and foreign heads of State in private. As far as claims that were nonsense, point at one anywhere I posted.
From what I've read in the last few posts, it's a wonder you haven't placed the blame on Fidel Castro given the flights of fancy we've been treated to.
WTF? Again. Point at something I've said or even inferred that was not factual. I'll say it again. IMO, Assange is scum at best. I never made any claims that he should go to jail if he did not break any laws. Which to my knowledge he hasn't yet. There are some ridiculous statement being made in this thread about the US and parts of it's govt. As if any other govt. out there is even marginally better. We've had bad leaders like any one else and we've done some harm because of it. I don't see the need to point out things other govts. do or have done. It's not my style. I personally don't like insulting other people. As far as the CIA and claims of impropriety or involvement, I simply don't know. Although I suspect not. But I don't know. Therefore the reason I've kept away from the issue. I don't like blurting out ridiculous shit the media has spurted and made up. FFS, this thread has had more than a few unsubstantiated claims thrown into it. Let's deal with the facts. I have no problem with opinions, as long as they are opinions based on facts. You can disagree with me all day using facts.

Edit....Quite often our media is presented with info dumps and will not use them if it's truly dangerous to the country. How ever they will and do if it's something so outrageous it has to be public. Obama nominated a new Defender for Whistle Blowers head of office after the one who Bush appointed(see the joke there?) got into serious trouble for head hunting on his own employees. A really honest and open move if you ask me in light of what has been reported lately.

Because Assange has always refused to give any address, it seems he believes in open information along as it is not his.  His information he wants kept private.  He is a hypocrite in that regard.

Lets look at this whole saga from a different angle.

Who was it that actually leaked the information to Wikileaks? That person is the one who broke laws and will probably get very hung. We all understand now that Wikileaks did what any other media outlet would do, they made it public.

There is one thing that worries me about Wikileaks, they have stated that they have other 'leaks' they have kept confidential, this would imply that wikileaks themselves are deciding what is good for the public to see. So now we have a situation of the watchers watching the watchers but who is watching the watcher watchers?

What we are hearing a lot of now from the press is that most of it is stuff they already knew through their 'contacts' but couldn't publish (lack of proof, not wanting to compromise sources, etc.). Now that the initial hullabaloo has died down many are starting to see it as pretty humdrum stuff.

Btw, regarding Government involvement in cyber attacks.
Some of the WikiLeaks cables show the the US Government suspect that China was behind the W32 Blaster Worm. (Remember that fucker? To date it's still responsible for the fastest infection I've ever seen after I accidentally hooked a new build up to my modem instead of my router with it's built in Firewall.)
And this year the Stuxnet Worm was linked to Israel since it appears to have been designed to target the Iranian Nuclear Programme.  blink

It beggars belief why any top tier government science programmes are even hooked up to internets or allow traffic of removable media in and out of their buildings.

Reading a good book just now by an ex spook that describes in detail how hard it is just to access a hard drive with full privileges and clearance within a building. Even hard drives are not left in a system but stored in secure rooms, have proximity sensors attached and mind blowing encryption.

Tis a good book btw.
Strange Gamma ray bursts from Mars, odd meteorites crashing on Earth, Crystal Meth addicted sociopath, top NASA propulsion lab and MMO scientist being murdered, the khmer Rouge, massive precious jewel forgery programmes and the only black girl in a white town with a penchant for amateur astronomy on the search for something big with her best friend, all the while smoking joints and drinking JD.

It's gotta be good   laugh

Last book I read in about two months.

Read a third of this in bed last night, a proper page turner.

iirc the Brits are so paranoid about data being lifted from old drives that they grind them up when they're finished with them and keep the resulting bags of 'grit' under lock and key. tongue2

Hey..maybe they could use them on the roads.  biggrin
