Got an odd issue with my older PC that I gave to my dad.  Been doing it for sometime now, now more regularly.  It's got an ATI 4000 series card in it if I remember right.  I think it's a 4870 and a 850watt PSU and a few HDDs.  You'll be in Windows fine, doing stuff, during a game, during Internet surfing or a min after turning it on (it's random).  It will reboot and push the GPU fan to full speed and not load anything.  If I turn it off, open the pc, fiddle with cables to make sure they're not lose, turn it back on, it's fine.  Then it will do it again.  Fiddled again other day, lasted a day and a bit then started doing it again.

Is this a GPU issue or a PSU issue?

I think it's the memory.

I used to get that with my 4870 when I was using Corsair Dominator DDR2 memory.
You don't need to check everything (it's a known issue), all you do is shut the power down completely for a minute then boot it up again.

You could try upping the DRAM voltage a bit, If it's an ASUS board they usually have the serial number of the various memory modules it supports with the actual voltage settings they need (as opposed to what's stamped on the side of it).

Maybe right.  I've moved one of the sticks to a different slot and hasn't done it since.

If it's not a heat issue. I guess it will be ram. They are quite intermittent and random Ram issues. Although usually tipped over by gaming ect, as these stress the hardware and expose the faults.

In the end, it's all just binary.
