The students might have an argument over the uni' fee rise as that is potentially going the way of America with high Uni' fees.  However, American Uni's are MASSIVE because of this funding.  I went, just to visit a friend, Northern Kentucky Uni' and that was apparently one of the smallest Uni's in the US, but to me, it was massive still.  However, I think with high fees, someone like me who wouldn't of been able to afford it, would never have gone.  Even though I only did a year at Uni' and it was only to finish off a HND (odd that it was at a Uni' but still), if the fees had been high I wouldn't of gone.

However, it was just on the news about college kids moaning about the scrapping of EMA's.  WTF!!! All they got was £30 a week anyway.  One dick said "At the end of the day, if I was getting money for going to college I might be more likely to attend classes".  College is a fucking choice. You go because you want to learn more so you should be going to fucking lessons anyway.  Not only that but do you know how you cope and solve this?  Get a FUCKING PART TIME JOB you lazy fucks!

I spent about 5 years at college doing 3 IT courses (1 year I fucked up so had to retake).  How did I fund it?  I got a fucking weekend job that paid me about £35 a day at Waitrose, that's how I fucking funded it.  Two nights a week (Fri and Sat).  So get a fucking job.  I'm normally fine with students but moaning about this thing is fucking stupid.  And speaking of Waitrose smile as you own part of the company when you work there, you get a bonus each year, which is worked out by how much profit John Lewis makes in the year and how many hours you work.  Work more hours, you get a bigger bonus.  I used mine to fund my trip to the US.  Only did 2 nights a week so only got about £250 but that's £250 for fuck all smile it's an incentive for people that work at Waitrose and John Lewis to work harder to try and make the company more of a profit.

Sadly it's not as easy as that Joe. Having been a student recently I can tell you that EMA is a godsend to people who don't come from a well off family. I mean I was spending £12 a week on busfare alone, and still had to buy books and food when I was there. Without that I can tell you it would have been a struggle especially since I live in a single parent household. As for part time work well, I've been looking for any work over the past 2 years and there hasn't been a thing. I feel in this situation you might be forgetting that nowadays is a different ballgame to what it was in your day... Wink

I dunno, the socialist in me says it's good.

But the old 'it was different in my day' man in me says...why should they get it ? I earned less as an apprentice working 6 days a week 12 hours a day knocking my pan in.

Meh, feck knows.

My day was only in the 90s.  I understand what you mean but college is a choice.  A lot of the kids we saw there were there straight from school because they didn't want to work yet.  Most people would be able to get work in a supermarket.  Shit work maybe, but had to be done.

Tried during that time to get grants but was always refused.  They claimed we had to much, we didn't.  My mum worked but wasn't earning much and my dad had been made redundant and due to his age could never find work again.  I made it through by hardly ever going out and working at Waitrose.

I agree with that.  And yes, maybe a grant system that needs to be paid back once started work.  I got a grant when at Uni for a year.  Yes, I confess it mainly went on a new PC and mini disc sound system.  But the new PC was technically for Uni smile and it wasn't a freeb.  I have to pay that back and have been slowly paying it back over the years.

Believe it or not joe, 90% of all university students here either get loans or their parents pay for it. It tends to make an education something very valuable when it isn't given to you. Low income students, athletes and academic stars can get free rides(scholarships or grants). But they have to maintain a high GPA to keep the scholarship paying forward. Although I suspect some athletes are gifted grades. A very serious offense BTW that can cause the uni to lose it's right to play ball for several years.

As my company is the largest private provider of Univesity Scholarships in NZ I can honestly say that I think scholarships are the answer.

They can be open to anyone regardless of circumstances and if the sutudent doesn't perform to standard then that ends their education at the university but does so without them having a loan or debt round their neck.

Ours are competitive so they have to perform just to get it in the first place.  In other words reward for effort.

EMA would account for less money than they'd get on the buroo, but that doesn't fit in with their slave labour plans (where you won't get any buroo money and be expected to be put on retail press ga placements for expenses only).

They are fucking people about left, right and centre regarding financial support atm. My old man had to quit his college course because he was getting no money from the College or the governme scumbags in Westminster. So, no money to pay the bills or eat which is bang out of fucking order if you ask me...

Over here you are entitled to at least £48/week to live on because the government say this is the minimum you need to get by, but yet they themselves are messing folk around. Arseholes.

This is regardless of wether you are unemployed or in further education and over the age of 18.
