It's called a favicon.

It's a .gif with a transparent background (can't recall the exact size), once created you save it as an icon (favicon.ico) then upload it to the public html folder of your site.
I used photoshop for it http://www.photoshopsupport.com/tutorials/jennifer/favicon.html

To do this you need to edit the HTML content of the your page. I inserted this code in the <head> <\head> section where the meta content bits are

Code:
<link href='COPY+PASTE URL TO YOUR FILE HERE' rel='shortcut icon' type='image/x-icon'/>

The file has to be a .ico file type. I use this site http://www.iconj.com/ to host my icon. No sign up required just upload any pic and they will save it as the .ico format and the will even give you the code to copy and paste or allow you to download the 'favicon.ico' file if you want to host it elsewhere then all you need to do is copy the code above and insert your own URL.

*man I take to long to type Woosty beat me to a solution

Ahhh well using Woosters solution will be for you then. Although if you dont have photoshop you can use the site I do to convert your pic to the .ico file and download that and place it in the root folder of your site.

Aye, it's pretty simple. Most browsers will look for the favicon and store it without any need to modify any files.
