So I have been given a D-Link Dir 615 router by Virgin Media. It's revision D4. Anyone got suggestions for a better firmware for it? Is DD-WRT the best or are there better ones? How do I even do it? I'm hoping no screwdrivers/soldering irons will be required as I have the co-ordination of half a cat. half a blind cat. Half a blind cat with parkinsons... you get the picture.

So, what do?

Edit: So it all works brilliant until it comes to connecting my vista-based laptop. I've got a D-Link 802.11N adapter which I've installed and I've disabled the onboard wifi (which is only 802.11g capable)

But Vista refuses to use the N network unless I force the router to use N only - ideally I'd like it to be a G/N mixed network. How do I get vista to use N in preference to G? :/

It's a simple case of downloading the new FW as a bin. (I think) and then you just update the FW as per norm through the GUI mate.

It does the rest for you.

Simply type your model into the WRT database and it will point you in the right direction.

AFAIK WRT is the only one for that router, Tomato I'm sure doesn't work on it.

But WRT is much a plenty good anyway. I love it. What a difference it makes.

You are looking for the Factory Webflash first: dir615d-revb-ddwrt-webflash.bin
Once that's in you can use: DIR-615_fw_revD_4-12B01_eu_en_20101012.zip

It's all done through the routers GUI (Firmware Update).
If you balls it up then I can tell you how to get into the Emergency Room and flash it back to the firmware it came with.
