Well...
Before the internets was newsgroups...
you subscribe to particular server and it would send you emails with stuff related to what you needed.
Newsgroups still run more popular for warez than ever.
The old newsgroup systems couldn't handle very large files. so people would brerak the files down in to rars, and pars, known as alt.bin's.
Small easy to transfer files.
They would get reassembled at the receivers end.
These days things like
Grabbit will do all the tech stuff for ya.
It lets ya search for newsgroups and grab the alt.bins and put's them together for you.
You have to subscribe to a usenet provider to be able to do it all.

FTP
Newsgroups
p2p Torrents
p2p limewire etc...
That's it simply and I may not even be right.
