Winter is coming!

« on: March 17, 2011, 10:39:18 PM »

UN has just passed a ten vote requirement resolution.

Libya will be dealt with via military intervention to protect civilians. Most likely a No Fly zone. According to some already too late.

But still it's legal and doing something.

Yes, at the very least it's legal, but could of course open up a whole new can of worms.
I have no doubt whatsoever that Gaddafi would have decimated the rebel forces not only in Benghazi, but in other cities as well. He may well still try if we don't get there first.
As others have said, these are relatively unknown waters, diplomatically speaking, but is it just?
When put in the perspective of the horror of Iraq and the legality of that GWB disaster, I have to say that I think it is just.
We all have very short memories as humans, but can we forget Panam flight 103 and the tragic killing of WPC Yvonne Fletcher (although some would have it that she was killed by MI5).
I think it's payback time for fuck face Gaddafi.

Yup.

Me too.

He's a dick.

I think we should maybe try spreading a bit more power about and deal with those fecks in Bahrain too. Did you see the government troops shoot that guy in the chest then head ? Pure cold blooded murder. For what ? Having the audacity to voice and display his opinions. So those Bahrainies in government whatever they call themselves need it too.

Was listening to this on the radio on the way up to Dundee when it came over that it had passed.  Cool

'All means necessary' short of an invasion, that's a lot of clout. Cool
Apparently Gadaffi doesn't use his army (he doesn't trust them), but instead uses a force of mercenaries.

Did anyone see Benghazi when the news came through? It was like they were holding a carnival with AA and fireworks going off.  smile

The problem with Bahrain is that its ruled by a Sunni minority who are sympathetic to the west, the same as Saudi. The Shiite majority look to Iran as their ideal of a republic and if they over threw the ruling monarchy then Iran would start having more influence in the middle east. That's something the powers that be deffo don't want so they'll probably sit on the fence in those kind of situations.

He'll be playing against enormous odds if he does break it, but I'm sure he has planned for that.
Venezuela next stop, methinks.

Here comes the turning of the oil screw.

Libyan oil minister says that they are open for direct negotiation of oil contracts from any country willing to make an offer.
Existing contracts will be honoured he says, but the UN resolution may affect the outcome of future negotiations.

Basically it looks they're trying to drag the likes of China into a position where they have assets to protect.  nowink

The rebels had better get the finger out or we'll all be playing statues for the next six years.

Sad It's started. Let's see how this plays out. Let the Arab league lead and do most of the military action. As if that could happen. dry I only want at most a military action based on a humanitarian mission.
