P.S.

The internets have conflicting opinions on this BTW.

I'm interested in a new standalone when I come back my hols, but the conflicting info is a turn off. I'd be tempted by the security of the PS3 guarantor but it's still too expensive an option for a sole BD solution.

My LG BD player is wireless(usb dongle) and I've had one firmware update that I'm aware of. Not sure what it did, but it still works. smile The player has Netcast software. The thing does quite alot, including play from usb hard drives. Haven't streamed to it yet, but it has Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, etc. etc..... I haven't seen many players, short of the bog standard ones (which are harder to find than you might think) that "just" play movies anymore. I knew tv's were like this, but had no idea that bd's did so much until I started doing research for my last buy. Both the tv and the player have Netcast, but it only gets used on the tv. Okay, tangent off. Short version, short of hardware limitations, bd's aren't as locked as past disc players. I think the pc bdrom with the right hard/software will make a good choice. At a third of the cost. I've seen them as cheap as 50$ with out all the packaged software, which hasn't stopped any Brit I know of. smile

I took the DVD player back in the end and got a full cash refund.
Mainly because it was only playing 30% of my region 2 discs and wouldn't play any region 1 of which I only have two or three anyway.
So anyway I've got a slimline HP Pavilion Athlon 64 x 2 4800, 2Gb ram which is connected to the LCD and a cheaper option is to put a low profile 5450 1Gb or 4550 512gb card in as they both draw less than 30 watts on full load evidently. The PSU is only 220w.
Both come with HDMI too.
Got loads of dvd drives hanging around (until I can afford a BD drive) and should be able to find a fix for the region coding of the drive if I look hard enough.
Seems like a tidy solution for the time being.

Whack Boxee on it http://www.boxee.tv/ and you can play around with Internet TV as well.  smile

I've been playing around with a few and this is the best I've found so far (including some plugins for Windows Media Centre that are pretty hit or miss).

Adri's getting me the card today...a 5450 1Gb hdmi, low profile and I hope the PSU doesn't bork on me. It has passive cooling and 30W max cons, so i should be OK.
I'll give Boxee a go when I test it.
Thanks smile

Just watched LOTR Return of the King, 720p and I have to say it was stunning!
Not just the film , but the detail.

Hell of a difference between upscaled DVD and HD, eh?  smile

Next step 1080p.  Cool (There isn't as dramatic a difference, but it's there.  Wink)
