I'd rather spend that dosh on a good platter HDD with fast access times and large storage capacity.

The benefits are minimum even for a gaming rig.

Wooster is the only person I know who actually has an SSD and he ended up putting it in his company laptop as it's a bit long in the tooth and heavy on the start up apps and access for graphics and computational apps for his wireless surveys.

60gb won't last for any remotely respectable games to be put on it. You'll get 4 modern games on it if you're lucky.  Wink

SSD's also have finite read/write cycle mate.

They will die eventually and if you're accessing them a lot by playing games they will die quicker.

No point in just using one for OS?
Then adding a Caviar Black SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache?

No, once your OS has started and loaded into memory it's pretty much running the essential services it needs.

So if you think it's worth it it's up to you, windows will load faster, but at that cost I'd wait an extra 5 seconds on my OS and gain myself a larger capacity for storage.

Hybrids seem to be the way to go for desktops.

I didn't see any benefit using the SSD on my desktop, and tbh there isn't much difference in the laptop either since the thing that delays the whole boot process longer than anything else (by a huge margin) is the wireless controllers.
It might boot into Windows in under a minute, but the wifi nics hold everything else back no matter which one I'm using.
(I have two for a reason)

I definately remember writing a post in here, but it's seemingly disappeared... that or I didn't actually hit reply...

I have a SSD as my boot drive. It's only 64gb but I wouldn't go back, ever. It's amazing.

I also have 640gb versions of that WD Black, in Raid as Games drives. I'd go for a 2tb Caviar Green tbh, it's ridiculously fast... plus the Blacks are a bit noisey.

Also, the SATA III stuff on those drives is pointless. They are nowhere near fast enough to bottleneck SATA II
