Still, nowhere near as bad as the upward inflection we imported from 'Neighbours'?

We've always adopted words - bungalow, jodhpurs & pyjamas come from India.

We eat baguettes & croissants.

The word "quiz" was invented to win a bet.

Some American words make sense - In Britain men wear trousers over underpants in the USA they wear underpants under pant. I wear knickers under pants. They are just alternate words get used to it.

Just don't get me started on BBC newscasters saying "skedule".
What happened to BBC English?

The Scots dialect takes words from all over the place as well.

i.e. We don't go to the dump to 'tip' rubbish, it's the cowp (coup (French)), brown is broon (brĂșn (Flemish/Germanic)), and so on.

We use English, Nordic, Germanic, Flemish (Flemish in a big way in central Scotland when you look into it), French, Gaelic etc. derivatives on a regular basis all the time without thinking about it.
They're all just accepted terms.

I reckon English (or some form of it) will be pretty much the global standard language among the educated by the end of this century.

The British Empire probably played a large part as well...we trespassed all over the bloody place and picked up (and left) words all over the world.

That Beeb presenter probably got a bollocking for that Americanism. They have very strict punctuation guides for presenters.

I nearly slapped someone the other day for referring to a number plate as a license plate.

Try again Woostytrolll!

It's an Americanism quite obviously. Did you not know they spelt licence differently Wink

I knew you'd try to wheedle out of it by trying to pretend that you'd done it deliberately.  tongue2

Oh no, it was a complete accident that I spelt licence the American way it's just a happy coincidence I was using an Americanism at the time.
