Hey guys,

Finally getting the internet this Friday night - been a long downtime at home Sad

Anyway, I have a sky box in the next room to where the Wireless Router will sit and for On Demand Services I need to connect said sky box to the router.
I have 2 options;
1) Run an Ethernet Cable from the Router to the SKY HD Box
2) Pay £70 for a SKY Wireless dongle

...by pure chance got a promo email from Ebuyer today.
Would these work in the same manner as just running an Ethernet Cable?

You won't get close to 85mb, so go for fast ones...

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B002I8MRNU/ref=asc_df_B002I8MRNU3674707?smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&tag=googlecouk06-21&linkCode=asn&creative=22206&creativeASIN=B002I8MRNU

Are the ones I have, and they can handle a 50mbit VM connection. It works as a real LAN, mine have been flawless since I installed them. Be sure to encrypt though, as the connections can "spill out" of the house to neighbours in range.

Don't think they'd get much more than the 50mbit though. How much bandwidth does Sky need?

You could also get more than a pair and use it to take your Internets upstairs, etc.

I have no idea what Sky needs but my connection will be a shoddy ADSL (8mb max).

Is there any other options to connect it up apart from running an ethernet cable?
How do these things work anyway?

Is your wiring for both outlets on the same (phase) leg of power? Something to think about before you buy, especially if your house is a 2 story. They most likely are, but it pays to check.

It looks like its mainly for Skys new anytime plus service that seems to use your broadband to stream content to your sky box rather than using the dish. I have no experience with the home plugs but the cheaper ones look as if they would do the job if your broadband connection is not up to much

Looking here http://www.sky.com/shop/tv/anytime-plus/set-up/ option 3 says that it should have been set up by the engineer when he was installing your box. I am guessing that the box install and broadband install have been done at different times.

Quote
If you are also having a Sky box set up, your standard Sky Anytime+ engineer set-up will take place at the same time.
Included in your box set-up
(otherwise £40)

Bin the idea of Wireless, it will glitch.

Homeplugs are the neatest, running a cable is the cheapest and fastest in terms of bandwidth.
(If you can drop the cable down behind the wall it can look pretty neat as well if you buy some fancy pants data sockets like these: http://www.cableuniverse.co.uk/1-x-cat5e-steel-wallplate.html )

Today I will be running a cable through the wall, along the house and then back through the wall.

Wired it temp last week and it is well worth having the Anytime+

Got to say I prefer everything about Sky TV over Virgin (apart from the BB speed obviously).

Sky may have updated their services but when I worked for them it worked as thus....

There is no actual real time on demand

What happens is your hard disk is partitioned. One half for Sky + live view and recording the other for Sky background services.

Whilst the box is on and whilst you watch a programme the box downloads a selection of predetermined programmes via satellite, equalling you can only watch a selection from what they have decided to download to your box.

It may be different now.
