Seems you have to go online in order to go to Steam offline mode if I'm not mistaken. Our internet at home has gone down so Steam tells me .'It seems you don't have an internet connection.' Try going into offline mode and Steam tells me 'Connection failed.' Hahahaha

But you are offline if the internet is down, so you shouldn't need to set it to Offline.

Games won't start coz Steam can't find a connection to the server.

Yep, Steam Offline mode needs (or at very least needed) to be set... It's more for permanent downtime rather than isolated outage.

As far as I know you need to be connected to steam in order to play any games at all.

Seems you have to be connected to the net before you can go offline and then play steam games which are 100% up to date. Tried this and it works ie disconnect from net while in offline mode and play the game. If you set Steam to start with windows (for Cent), having shutdown in offline mode, Steam will ask you if you want to start offline or online. Simply click offline.

I couldn't connect to Steam the other day and Fallout 3 fired up no problem. That's because the games cache had already been verified when you were online. If you downloaded it, never ran it, went offline, tried to run, it wouldn't verify the cache and wouldn't start.

I was pointing out you don't need to be online to go offline. Splinter has now found the popup that prompts you to go offline when you start a game with no connection.

Yep, the update one is right as well... If it realises it needs updating good luck on getting it to load.
I remember it was a gigantic arse when I had limited internet. It's partially the reason I got a Voda Dongle.

Had a bad experience of this recently when I lost connection for a few hours. Steam refused to switch into offline mode, no matter what I tried and regardless of what game I tried to launch. After I got my internet back, it switched to offline mode easily, then back to online. Rebooted and tried to simulate loss of internet, it allowed me to switch to offline mode OK then.
Clearly its rather shite and tbh a significant minus point for me with regards the steam service as you cannot trust it to allow easy transition into offline mode. I tested this with both guard enabled and disabled....
