The inherent risks of buying used mobos, but that's the business I'm in.
Luckily my contacts are very decent in this respect.
I have an am2 mobo which works fine with cpu installed, but when you clamp down the cooler to lock, it simply switches off. Or if you boot it up with the cooler locked in, it fires up but nothing else.
Maybe a dry joint somewhere scratchhead

Have you tried breadboarding it? Is it shorting against the case possibly? Forgive me if I ask a dumb question.  smile

Not dumb at all mate.
I'm actually testing it on the bench as i do with most used boards.
Never seen this before. Assuming a dry joint due to the pressure of closing the heatsink lock scratchhead

Tried 2 different working cpu's, same result.
Changing the mobo.

I had a mobo that did the same years ago. Turned out there was a hairline fracture in the board and circuitry  that only opened up when the processor went on because of the tension.
