Maplins sell a lot of Chinese crap with a high mark up, iirc all our leccy equipment has to carry the British Standard Kite Mark and it isn't mentioned if it complies, so maybe it was a bit dodgy on 240V.  confused

Might be the reason. We have our own UL code it has to meet. These are built(or are built for) buy a company that does mostly Apple products. Hence the FatsMac nomenclature. Supposedly, they're not made by Foxconn. Anyways, I'm sold.
