hi! I'm changing the disc drive on a 60GB PS3 , taking a drive from one and putting it into the other , i don't do this kinda thing very much reason being - I'm a bit heavy handed , anyhoo theres a ribbon type thing that connects to the bottom of the disc drive and folds over and connects to the bottom of the console its self  i believe that's called the motherboard? . the bit that this ribbon connects to clicks up to release and down to secure and i broke it! as i was trying to release the bottom one this little toty plastic thing came off i tried attaching it back on but no luck,,  so the thing is - can i secure this without "that bit" and if so what would be best ? coz i used masking tape n then i thot maybe that's not the best idea the thing could go up in flames. any help would be appreciated guys thanks.

Maybe electrical tape.  That's not flammable I believe.

i think you might be screwed, tape isn't gonna cut the mustard i don't think.

Are you sure it's broke? From what i recall, the plastic "flap" bit can be detached from the clip.

If it is indeed broke, and you're handy with a soldering iron you could solder the wires to the contacts individually, bit fiddly though.

It's the clamp you've broken off, personally I'd just tape it in place and hope for the best. Wink

How warm does it get? Can you use hot glue?  It takes a lot of heat to warm hot glue.

aye cheers dudes !! ill try refit the clamp back on - if not ill use the electrical tape on it and tape right over where the clamp was, i had it on last night and the heat coming out of it after 5 mins was unbelievable (i think the 60gb are like that) , i dont think the masking tape was holding it anyway and the drive still wasnt working so hopefully that was the problem, im planning on selling it so it would be better to get that clip onit rather than tape but hey! if its in working condition-ish Roll Eyes thanks

Look around inside, there's ultra sticky tape used for some other stuff, so you could maybe use a bit of that.

Don't tape over the socket, it won't work that well (since most of the tape will be 'holding down' a component that's already fixed in place). You want to tape the ribbon in place.

The daughter board on the Blu Ray drive is matched to the PS3.

There's a picture here: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=20341519&postcount=2615

When you buy a new optical drive from eBay etc, it usually comes without a daughter board, so you have to take the one off your old drive and bung it onto the new.

Tbh it's probably easier than stripping out the laser heads and swapping them over.

Try not to break the clamps this time though.  happy
