I don't normally use Windows for Apache now. I usually find it's either a module causing Apache not to load, the Apache Service not being loaded or it being on the wrong port... generally.

Tried going directly to the IP itself?

Solved it....uninstalled xampp completely (of course I backed up my ongoing projects) - re-installed 1.7.3 and its now working perfectly

MySQL server was causing the problem i.e. it wasn't running

Yup, I typed in 127.0.0.1 it didn't work either when the problem arose

Ah, now I know where I went wrong. I never stopped the apache and MySql server when "upgrading".

The silly boogers at xampp never said so, I installed xampp on top of 1.7.3 without stopping the services. At least they could of said so scratchhead

I've not installed 1.7.4 yet, but I was wondering why the installation process was coming up with all the prompts about files that can't be overwritten.....it was because xampp was running in the background...if I had uninstalled xampp completely after MySQL wasn't running, it would of avoided an unnecessary re-installation of Windows 7, but then again I had a bug that needed to be got rid of

Yeah, that'd explain it... on Linux you can upgrade their files whilst it's running, it just won't take effect until you restart the processes.

Any reason you're not using a Linux distro, or is this the only box you've got?

Pffft, no reason at all, sometimes its very complicated for me, with e.g. permissions and the terminal commands, just doesn't run most of the time for me. I could go to endless forums and still not find the answer.

I swear I wouldn't mind it as a replacement or secondary OS to Windows (not to say Windows isn't complicated, not that I don't know anything about OSes), I have to prioritize my internet usage to my job, and constant updating isn't healthy. I can't have two internet contracts, unless I was earning tonnes of dosh

Oh, you're on mobile broadband aren't you?

If you need a disk, I can always forward you one on, if you wanted. Keas and co have had disks from me in the past, so I'm certified safe lol.

Linux is, and I make no bones about this, a twat at first. It's not all that intuitive when you've come from Windows. I find though if I'm bitching about anything at work these days it's the Windows stuff, not the Linux though.

Not quite sure why in 1.7.4 and onwards (it is now 1.7.7) you have to turn off UAC, crazy, that is like saying you have to show everyone the private files (on a shared computer), there are files that I want to keep secret and protected from misuse i.e. theft, deletions etc....
