Not the glassy variety, as we all know, its the software variety from Microsoft
Don't remember anything before Windows 3.1 except for MS-DOS (man aren't I old, lol)

Those were the days!
I still get machines in with Win 2000 or 95/98 and they insist on keeping the OS.
Who am I to argue?

I wish Windows would stop evolving at the moment. Windows 8 is pure bobbins.

In fact it makes me sad how generally bad the new Windows could be, considering how good Windows 7 is.

I suppose maybe Windows 9 will be good, judging by Microsofts history

95 (Good), 98 (Bad), 2000 (Good), Me (Bad), XP (Good), Vista (Bad), 7 (Good)

98 wasn't that bad relatively, however it did popularise the BSOD due to VXD errors, and it struggled to stay on for more than a day.

Though, frankly Windows 7 on a domain is a flipping pain for a user like me. Group Policy is a massive twat, and on lower end cards I notice a few graphical problems (flickers, corruptions) when using two monitors and full screen applications. I take for granted so many of the things I use on a daily basis. The more I use Linux though the more I realise how bad Windows is at handling some things.

I think 8 is a must for Microsoft. If they want to break out of the corporate loop and into more general use, then they needed a decent tablet and phone OS. I think that's what 8 is, an OS put forward for the phone and tablet market. I realize it's a desktop OS also, but I don't think that's what M$ is aiming for. I think it's kind of like the auto makers and their platform consolidation. It makes it cheaper to produce the OS for all devices or cars if they make it user friendly for all devices, if they use the same basic core. That's if they don't massively fail.  tongue2

What MS should be doing is extending Windows Phone7 towards Tablet and Phone, and keeping Windows for Computers.

Apple completely have that approach right. You can't merge the phone/tablet and PC together and get a decent platform out of it in my opinion.

Like iOS it can be consolidated with some shared code and ideas between the platforms. You'll have either a tablet optimised OS on a PC, or a PC optimised OS on a tablet. The latter one won't work, so the former will be a dumbed down piece of shit for a PC, see Ribbon UI on Windows 8 eating more screen that it realistically needs to and a stupid mobile style program selection choice.

Apparently the ability to press Windows and type the first few letters was just too swift.

-edit-

Little more research states my post does contain some FUD. Metro is enabled by default, but you can get a traditional desktop back. That's less annoying now. Explorer is still ghey though.

I don't know what to think about Metro. I do know (or I heard a while back) that M$ supposedly planned to make it fairly easy for IT to drop back and lock in 7 style desktop. So ms is thinking about corporate ahead of time with this. We will see. They always manage to screw up some where.

I think Vista was delayed and yet they still released a dodgy piece of software unto the public, if I could time travel, I would tell myself not to get overhyped over a £370 worth of shite.....whether I would listen is another thing...lol

Problem with Vista is that the man in charge of QA for it was given a better offer from someone else (Amazon I think), but MS held him to his contract and wouldn't let him go until it was released.

Obviously he decided he'd prefer to go sooner rather than later.
