Do you think it's pointless to stick a new graphics card in this?

Abit AN8 SLI mobo (socket 939)
Athlon X2 4600
Nvidia 6800 GTS

Ram is not an issue, but i'm pretty much at the upper limit of the cpu this mobo can take, and i think the cpu will be a bottleneck for a newer card.

any suggestions that don't involve new mobo/cpu/ram/

The only thing I can think of that might make it go faster is dropping it off a high building mate.  tongue2

You could probably put something around the 8800 class nVidias in without it being too bottlenecked imo...

...hard to say what performance you'd get out of even buying a cheapish card for £100, whether or not it's the system bottleneck, or the card bottlenecking graphics.

A review I just looked at had a X2 4800 just about keeping pace with a P4 D 840. A mate of mine used to run a P4D with a GTX280, and it did ok.

I personally wouldn't potentially waste much money on seeing what I could put in it... it's got 16x PCI-E which is pretty good...I just worry that the CPU is really slowing it down, which is what killed off my mate using the P4D.

Depends as well, what you want to play on it. If you want to play Source games, and not BF3... you might be alright with lower settings and a £70-100 card... maybe not in anything better than 1280 or so.

I wouldn't even attempt BF3 on that rig. laugh

I don't think i'll bother trying to upgrade it. It suits me for what i need, which is watching movies, downloads and streaming to my PS3. I think you're right in saying spending money on it would be wasted cash.
