Is SNMP continuous on a network?
Does the NMS request data from the Agent all the time or is it only when an admin tells the NMS what to request?

Generally an SNMP server will have a polling interval set by the user to determine how often it requests info. It can also be done manually.

ok so with RMON the monitored devices send there info straight to the probe without it being requested?
is that what takes load off the network and NMS, the fact that there isnt a request AND then sent data, theres just sent data?

Pretty sure snmp is always a server request/client answer kind of deal.

When you configure snmp on a device, all you do is configure a string, like passphrase. Any snmp server that has the passphrase can then read or write to the client.

Rmon I donno much about but from what I can tell there's more burden on the client than the server as you say.
