After a major crash caused by a faulty device, I've lost Aero and delved and delved for a solution, but methinks a repair install may be the only option.
Any opinions before I go ahead with that?

Did you run Windows Experience Index again?
Apparently Aero is disabled unless you get a score higher than 3.

Problem solved smile
I had installed software for a mini usb projector and it was the device itself that caused the crash. It's my shop PC and the device belongs to a client.
Uninstalled the software, assuming that it would also uninstall the device.
Wrong! It had installed EZ Display as an additional display adaptor and it only became apparent when going to refresh the index 'new hardware found'.  scratchhead
Uninstalled it from device manager and problem solved after a reboot.
Silly me!
