I was cracking my nut over the unexplainable Skill stat ...which DICE apparently explaiend. http://battlelog.battlefield.com/bf3/forum/threadview/2832654624731770357/ So basically, this is what determines your skill level on your stats page:
• You gain/loose SL based on every confrontation with another player • Killing a highly skilled enemy gives you more points than killing someone less skilled • Points are not transferred from a player to another, they are simply added/subtracted based on the encounter and the SL of both parts (thus, after an encounter, one part may go up 50 points while the other loses only 20) • The SL is used for matchmaking And here I was hoping it would include usefull stats like obtaining team objectives, destroying vehicles, healing, repairing, resupplying .... LOL useless stat.

It's not that pointless... it does show how likely you are to win a fire fight.
Mine is a bit low at the moment, it's normally somewhere around 450 =[

Actually, it tells quite someone with a negative kill/death ration can be better than a player with a positive kill/death.
If they are playing against a higher standard of player, and nearly holding their own they might be a much better player than someone who camps noobs and gets a five to one.
The best way to gauge skill would be look at kill/death in conjunction with skill, and score per minute.

Skill is bogus. Example: I once was an MVP with positive K/D, loads of health, ribons for all sorts of things like carbine, supression, revives and so on. Negative skill reward. Skill calculation takes too little parameters in consideration.
And concerning SPM there are too many bonus score rewards that influence SPM I feel. Medal this, service star that ... but its more accurate then Skill I'll grant you that.

Must have been killing the nubs and dying to the good players... seemples :P
Skill only measures your likelihood of fighting someone and winning. For that it's a decent measure. I don't consider reviving, dropping ammo or health as a skill. Score per minute accurate maps your ability with being decent at all things as such is a decent way to determine all round performance. Skill only gives a gradient to judge the kill to death ratio against, nothing more. Sure, score per minute is indeed skewed slightly by medals, etc... but those performances, medals and ribbons give an accurate representation about how decent a person is at the game, case in point... if you're got quite alot of medals, you're obviously quite good at something.
Though frankly all this stats shit about games winds me up. I don't give a shit in other games I play, I'm just confident I'm decent at them by being at the top of the leaderboard :P

It's somewhat ironic you have a stats sig really I don't care about stats either, but to say they don't correlate to something is kinda wrong. You can tell based on three stats how decent someone is, generally.... but a negative, traditionally red value isn't necessarily a pointer to a bad player. A high skill, and low k/d but a decent score per minute is an indicator they are playing against good competition. Low skill, low k/d and low score is the sign of bad. The win to loss round ratio is completely pointless though, since even if you're the best player in the world affect things totally.

Stats don;t matter a fuck. And if they do...it;s only squad points and caps that matter.
