I really dont understand what is going on here.
SOPA stands for Stop Online Piracy Act. An act that is being introduced into American legislation to try curb online piracy.
There are a lot of powerfull 'providers' that are rallying against it . . . Reddit, Google, Widipedia . . . sites that depend on free and open internet transactions between people for their very core, what they are.
I dont know if the anti hype is real? Can it be possible under the proposed legislation to take down WaNK because someone posted a link to a copywrited video, or is this just scare mongering?

Is this the beginning of the end for the internet as we currently know it?

I looked into this a couple of weeks ago, and it looks as if they could because our server is hosted in the US.
The solution though would be to migrate to a server in the UK where the legislation doesn't apply...yet. confused

America just basically forced Spain to pass piracy law recently, so there is precedent for US meddling in Copyright Law.

It's a big bag of evil, and America has to stop it... SOPA, the whole lot.

Could also ruin the server hosting business in America as people look for safer havens away from US regulations, these could be DNS blocked... we all know that's ineffective against anyone with skills. If I had US hosting I'd be on to them right now saying we'll be moving if SOPA passes. Ignoring the fact it could kill the effectiveness of DNSec also.

I personally think it'll kill business wanting to start up in America, especially Internet based if it passes.

I’m still in the dark.
I made a pact with myself to never pirate games or content. An honourable philosophy I think because of the simple fact that I like and enjoy fantastic games.
Playing Skyrim I wonder at the amount of work and dedication and sheer effort that developers of the game went through. Just everything about that game is almost perfect. I can enter a world and play for hours and hours. I paid money for that game and it is worth every cent.
Short note: I love paying talented people for their efforts. I gladly give my money to talent in the hope that the games will get better and beta.

SOPA is dead and was never going to be. It was only a front to disract us from the real threat coming up for a vote. Protect IP Bill Big business is still in control gentleman. Still think Obama is any different? A couple of threads ago, I didn't defend Obama after stating that he was no longer my choice. Now you see a small part of the reason why. Same smell, different odor. No real "change". I could elaborate, but it's depressing. Wink

Put on hold because of the back leash from SOPA, I'm guessing. Wink Protect IP literally let's the govt create a new office with it's own officers, instead of using an existing entity. That means that they can literally be more heavily influenced by the administration, instead of sticking more closely to to the law. We have seen recently how institutions like the supreme court and regional DA's have been twisted to interpret law by political leanings more heavily than ever before, and that was all from the previous administration.(heavily conservative, pro capitalism). I don't want any more govt when they can't do anything right with it's huge size now.

Therm, the more I read about this the more I despair.

Added to this issue is also the extradition treaty that currently exists between the UK and the USA. Painfully one-sided and unfair and I truly wonder what possessed whoever it was to sign up to it. Why do I mention this in this thread? This is why: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-south-yorkshire-16544335

Now, can someone please explain to me why Google is not in court when I can simply do exactly the same thing using Google?

I think the threat of SOPA is very much real, SOPA alone can break the Internet... Protect IP just goes one step further in breaking it.

The problem is that congress is still talking amendments, not scrapping. Both acts are fundamentally broken, down the very core. They can't, and shouldn't be saved. I've actually been following this one for a while now, the first I heard of it was early November.

I on the most part do not participate much in piratical acts any more. I used to download literally hundreds of albums over a year at uni, and it was a tool for finding new music. That's entirely not necessary any more due to services like We7, or Spotify (though less so now Spotify is 20 hours limited, the slutbag). I also listen to much more music on iPlayer, which aims me towards artists. Also if I find something out and about, Shazam or Soundhound can usually find what it is for me... download it all to my phone with AmazonMP3.

These days I tend to aim towards cheap offers, rather than piracy. Steam is a good source for that kind of thing for games for me too. Onlive, believe it or not, I reckon could become a decent tool for demoing games. I can't remember the last time I went out my way to download a demo, the closest has been some Betas. I barely buy any brand new games now, I'm happy with waiting a little bit on the most part. I've only bought four games in the last year that are under a month old, five if you count Sonic CD, which is actually eighteen years old.

Probably TV is about the only thing left, I often just take gambles on DVDs (if I'm not sure I'll love, it... DVD not Bluray... and if it's still £12, I'll wait till it's about £3)... TV on the other hand takes a very long time to come out, then it's usually on Sky. Scheduled TV is an archaic mechanism, in my opinion... the only thing I will go out my way to watch is Football.

I don't mind a bit of piracy, or free stuff around. Some companies have shown that alternate methods for payment work. In fact, some can't afford it, and my fuzzy Linux Open Sourced agenda says... 'fine!'

When I couldn't afford things as student, I didn't... I also wasn't going to sit around bored. I always promised myself when I had the means to afford things, I would. Though, again because I like open source on my main PC nearly all the software on it, barring games, is free anyway except Windows of course.

Course, I still have 5tb of Hard Drive Space in my main PC. I buy drives like a pirate, but don't have the need for them any more lol. Though, if I am honest I'd thought about ripping all the disks to my PC so I don't have to find the disk from the shelves.

American penalties for copyright infringement are absolutely mental. They can search, and seize on borders... frankly, I'd think twice about bringing anything to the States that was dubious.

I'm not going to comment on the extradition case. I absolutely do not in any way believe in downloading or "aquiring" any artist's media. My reasons for that are mine and are justified, to me. In saying that, it often blows me away in how much "aquiring" goes on on some places and how open people are about it. I've heard all the arguments, blah, blah, blah... My point is that this exact conversation isn't one I can be non partisan about. What we do isn't right, but it's only caused by the tremendous amount of piracy that goes on. The answer lies some where in the middle.

Well, bro, that's your right. You know by now that I am non judgmental and would never call some one out on it. I am just stating the reason why I could not stay non partial on this subject and why I should stay out of it. Cool
