I see myself as an inocent casualty.
Like I said, I pay people for entertainment. I actually enjoy giving money to people that take the time and effort to make something that will entertain me. The reason they go to so much trouble is because they will be paid for entertaining me.
I take great offence when game developers load packages into their software which only allow me to play when their servers are sure that I own a legitimate copy of their software. We have all heard the arguments. What if i cannot get online? blah blah blah.

I am sure as the ever expanding belt buckel on my jeans that there have been other "packages" introduced to my pc by regulatory authorities to examine and monitor my gaming habits all in the name of regulation.

The thing is that it is starting to become very obvious is that if I dont enjoy this invasion all I have to do is acquire a pirate copy of the software.

A perpetuating self-defeatism.

If you know what I mean?

All the bills are in various committees where they are wrangling back and forth. It's an election year and that means nothing will get done. They'll bitch and moan about one another, but after the back lash that SOPA received, I don't see anyone doing a whole lot until elections are over. SOPA, Protect IP, and the Open Act(to name three) are all going to sit in various forms for a while I think. There's too much to risk. The general public is aware of SOPA. Even though most of them couldn't tell you what an IP is, they've have the general idea that it's "bad". Generally, uneducated masses with an opinion is bad, but in this case it may well work to the benefit of some good. I thing the whole retail model as it exists is living well beyond it's usefulness. I see people making money on the web and starting successful business models all the time in new more focused ways. I don't see companies that mass market "one" product being successful any more. The internet has fractured that model. People are no longer following the masses trend. Democratization of the internet will force these old companies out of the way. I

Certainly enough publicity about it now with Wikipedia taking itself out of play and Google slapping a black bar over it's logo in protest.  smile

It will eventually go if people stay alert. The person that signs that bill will burn down the house. I have no love for my govt and all i can do is vote and vocalise.

There's been rising concern over how much information social networks give away about individuals, most of it passively it has to be said.
But if Governments get access to the information the sites have already processed to sell on, then it makes their jobs so much easier, basically it boils down to a live feed of what each and every user is talking about, and where they are doing it (either via IP or geotagging).

Your publicly visible social network is all well and good, up to a point.
But if you find yourself classed as a subversive (for whatever reason) under and oppressive regime, you're screwed...and so are most of your friends.

For security agencies it's a total godsend and (worst case) your opinions today could see you jailed in twenty years.
Shit, I could type up 'death to all Americans' as a joke on Twitter and immediately be barred from entering the USA already (oh, and as a bonus, expect an interrogation when I get off the plane).

Are forums safer?
I dunno, but the fact that many are run by individuals or companies who may not be under the same jurisdiction of the countries their servers are based in, might make a difference.
That is, until those countries pass laws that allow their governments to access the data 'at source' that is.  confused

Freely giving your life's details on-line is nothing but a recipe for disaster. I cancelled my facebook account long ago because I didn't like the fact that I became a product.
Yes folks, a product. Your information is forwarded to advertising companies. Search wrist watch in google, a few hours later wrist watch ads appear on you facebook page. You can of course block this by denying cookies etc, but how many people know this?
Did you know that any page in Wikipedia becomes a facebook page? I know this because I tried to set an account for Northern Territory Police on facebook. It was taken. Yes, taken. Now who in the hell would start a facebook account Northern Territory Police? It was automatically generated from wikipedia. That meant I had to call the police account Police Force of the Northern Territory and register as a government entity.

So that means that the amount of people who are legitimate facebook users is false. Another ploy to attract advertisers.
