The UK government is consulting on changing the law regarding IP (Intellectual Property) regarding copyright, and one of the thing they are proposing is to consider giving the library readers, students and researchers free reign on copyrighted material scratchhead

There's always FileSonic, DepositFiles, FileServe, TurboBit, ExtaBit, FilePost, BitShare, Ziddu, UploadStation, FileJungle, MediaFire, PutLocker, FileFactory, RapidShare, FreakShare, ZShare, HotFile, Crocko, Wupload, Uploading, MegaShare, Badongo, iFileIt, EnterUpload, GameFront, UploadedTo, FileApe, Loadto, TwoShared, FileKeen, and JumboFiles, if one is interested in a MegaUpload replacement. smile

It's all been abandoned for the forseeable future. You can breathe now.

Well Glam, with a US legislature that is willfully ignorant of how the Internet works and how real people use it, with millions of dollars spent by the entertainment industry on lobbyists to keep the legislature misinformed, and that same industry giving millions of re-election dollars to keep their ignorant and misinformed friends in office.... I somehow doubt we've seen the last of this.

The scary part is that the entertainment industry is, comparatively, just a small player. Once the technology evolves enough for bigger fish to get involved, such as pharmaceutical/healthcare or agriculture, the defecation will really be impacting the rotary oscillating air moving device.

In the anti camp you have some pretty big players as well though.
They may not necessarily dish out bungs campaign donations, but they do have the weight of public opinion behind them.

Oh, without doubt.

They've taken down a lot of sites yesterday:

Anonymous Anti-Fascist Hackers Deface White Supremacist Websites:
http://www.cyberguerrilla.info/?p=2081

Oldie but Goodie: Anonymous Hacks Westboro Baptist Church Website During Live Confrontation:
http://youranonnews.tumblr.com/post/16196155060/oldie-but-goodie-anonymous-hacks-westboro-baptist

I haven't checked if the sites are back up but as of midnight last night:

DOWN - http://www.universalmusic.com/
DOWN - http://www.universalmusicmagazine.com/
DOWN - http://riaa.com/
DOWN - http://www.justice.gov/
DOWN - http://mpaa.org/

Just checked. All but http://www.justice.gov/ are still down.

I do applaud, indeed admire what they do, but I wouldn't trust them as far as I could throw them. Arms length, keeping my distance, admiring and applauding from afar.

I was kinda into them when they stood up against Sony and thought they were true white hat.

But now I think they're vigilantes and need to stop this kind of shit...

"We believe in militant direct action to smash white supremacy, expose them to
their communities, confront them at their jobs and homes, and disrupt their
organization’s ability to conduct meetings/rallies, distribute their hateful
propaganda, and communicate on the internet. Those who want us in the gas
chambers, who seek to take away our freedoms, deserve it not for themselves."

They've just started to do the very shit they're against. Who the fuck are they to decide who is granted liberty and freedom ? They are non elected non state sanctioned and a self governed 'anonymous' group.

Trouble is that they get off on the power and it's as much about the trip, if not more, than the cause.

I very much agree Keasy. Which is why I qualified my "admiration" of them with the caveat that it's at arms length and that I wouldn't trust them as far as I can throw them.

I think the general behaviour of Anonymous will be as changeable as the wind since it doesn't have a fixed ideaology.

If he is GenY he's 20-30... which he seems to be implying he is.

Most of my mates don't ever bother to discuss politics or the sort. We just do not care. Our input is largely irrelevant, and it is something that will get worse at the poulation ages and influence sticking with baby boomers.

Though I am totally an anon sympathiser.  I don't think the free speech argument holds; if it was pedophiles being attacked would anyone care? Anon goes after what it finds distateful. Sometimes it will be a total hypocrit, but on the most part I think it has decent motives, just slightly miguided supporters and methods at times. Death threats, etc, are not cool.
