Every now and then, I go into major re-arrangement mode with regards to stuff in my computer bag. Everything is needed but I am always amazed in what I carry with me whenever I go out on a job:

Of course, if I could, I would put one of my guitars in there so that I can have a 'jam session' while waiting for those pesky blue bars to complete their journey from left to right. Alas, my Brenthaven shoulder bag is not big enough to accommodate any of my guitars:

Now, y'all need to appreciate the reasons for all that stuff; especially the cables. It all comes down to getting a result with a client on the first visit.

The cables are a mixture of firewire, USB and ethernet. All with their various respective types and lengths. At least once a week I will need to leave a cable with a client because either the cat chewed on the printer cable or they lost their firewire cable or their network won't work because an ethernet cable is faulty. Of course, I never know what the fault is until I get there.

The mobile hard disks - one of them has three partitions (Snow Leopard, Leopard and Tiger); used for starting up from on Intel based Macs. Another one has the same partition scheme but for use on PPC based Macs - both also have additional Utility software installed. On the third mobile HD I have software images stored. The final one is used for backing up a client's Mac prior to working on it.

The CD case mainly contains OS software disks (10.2, 10.3, 10.4, 10.5, 10.6) and Utility disks (DiskWarrior, Drive Genius etc). There were empty sleeves left over so I put various other CDs in there. Again, all this comes down to my personal experience where a client, for example, cannot find their own OS CD/DVD.

The tool case. Well, sorry but no self respecting engineer goes out on a job without a set of screwdrivers.

The remaining stuff is just a mixture of lil' ol' bits. USB hub, 16-in-1 card reader, dictaphone, Edirol R-09HR Wave/MP3 recorder, pens, moleskin notebooks, elgato eyetv diversity.... and most important - a small hip flask with Glenfiddich single malt in it for those moments when one can 'murder' a drink.

The end result? I can guarantee as much as I possibly can that when I go out on a job, I will get a result the first time without inconveniencing further my client by having to return again because a cable, or a CD or whatever is required to continue the job. This is an important element of my business plan - my company's 'vision statement' if you wish.

It looks like a lot of stuff; and it is. But it all fits very snuggly and nicely in my bag and really does not weigh that much.

My bag is the same, with more emphasis on keeping Cisco equipment running and conducting wireless surveys.
(I've even got a Cisco 1100 AP in there for some reason and the boot of the car is far worse)

Some nice geetars there btw. Cool

The "steel jobby on the right" is a resonator. It's a Johnson Tricone which I got not so long ago from a mate. He was about to put it on eBay but I just paid him exactly what he was after. Mates helping out mates kinda thing.

I also have another resonator, a Tanglewood Steel Resonator guitar:

No, don't do youtube uploading. Enjoy watching youtube vids but do not upload. My two boys also play, oftentimes trying, but failing, to out-jam their old man. smile

We're both in the same game, Splinter. smile

At least once a week, I go into self-teach mode. I install a fresh copy of OSX server on one of the spare internal hard disks, start up from it and basically mess around - what would happen if I do this? What is the effect of enabling/disabling that? How do I achieve something a client may want? What would happen if I execute this or that UNIX command? etc etc etc.

I very much value the reputation I have built with my existing clients. And that's the key word - reputation. It is a word that I keep repeating to both my sons so that they can appreciate it's value. My reputation with my clients (individuals, small businesses or large corporate) is that when they need to call me out on an emergency (as opposed to a scheduled call) then nine times out of ten I will get them up and running on that first call. The only times that I will need to schedule a return call to complete the job is if it's a hardware fault and I need to order a part. Even then, I have a number of 'spare' Macs in my garage which I configure and loan out to them so that they are not inconvenienced till the part arrives.

Others prefer the "let me come over, have a look and then return again with whatever 'gear' I need" approach. That's okay if the client is happy to be charged twice. I favour my approach as it has proven, to me at least, and to my accountant, and to my bank manager, to work as far as my business is concerned.

On the guitar front, I recall a job I did recently with a famous musician. There was quite a bit to do and it was an over-night job. I decided to take one of my guitars with me. Now, there's no way that I could even compete with this musician (it's his guitar playing skills that made him internationally famous) but just to be there and 'jam' with him during breaks was awesome. Gave me a few tips also. Amazing experience.

That's what it's got in it's bagses...the boot of the car is stuffed with all the bulky stuff like spare Cisco kit, more tools, cabling, ladders etc.
(Tbh it needs a good tidy out)

Hehe... yes, I did do that, didn't I. It's one reason why I love providing support for Macs. There's no way that I could even dream of mixing in some of those circles otherwise. And it all started with one musician who then recommended me to another who then recommended me to someone else...... etc.

Bill Wyman, Gary Moore and Rick Wakeman.

You can now breath easy and be able to sleep tonight instead of racking your brains trying to put names to familiar faces LOL :-)
