A friend of mine found this amazing brass sword handle in a remote location in the Northern Territory of Australia. He has done a bit of research and reckons it is a spanish military issue from the 1700s. Im not so sure? And, what the fuck is it doing in Australia of all places? I can tell you that where he found it is part of a large river delta that floods constantly during the wet season. Any history buffs willing to re-write Australian history?

Yarrr! Pirates!
Interesting find. I'd have though it was more likely to be British or Dutch, maybe Portuguese. However, there were Spanish ships working those waters.
Google shows most swords as having a guard on them. The one you've shown is more a broadsword style, or that of a shorter Roman Gladius. Not that it's Roman!

Were any made pre 1831? Just pondered on a story of a British soldier nicking it from a dead Frenchie during the Napoleonics and then being sent to Australia. None of which is likely to be even remotley true. Some say this was issued to French elite infantrymen. However the sword was also sold by the French to other countries, so who knows. I think I'll stick to my story as I like it EDIT: just found that some were around before 1831 and one in an antiques store is dated to 1810. So conclusive eveidence that my tale is indeed fact

Awesome links woosty and thanks everyone. I have found similar. There are markings in the hilt forged when the sword was made. Its those markings that will probably tell what year and where it was forged. Ive got close up photos of them. It is just increadible to me that it was found where it was. How the hell did it get there? My theory is that the makassans http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Makassan_contact_with_Australia may have somehow been in possesion of it and traded with local aborigines? Or maybe even waged small battles with them?
