'An how faust kin it ging?'

« on: November 07, 2007, 11:41:00 PM »

http://3xs.scan.co.uk/ShowSystem.asp?SystemID=744

Including VAT it's £5500  blink

Who would be insane enough to buy something like that?
Can the sum of it's parts be worth that amount of cash?

I look at what I have at the moment (not the new stuff) and just can't see how 40 times the price would give 40 times the benefit and even with the new kit I would probably only need to double the cost to be on a par with it.

My mind reels..really!
My car was only £4500.. confused

What jackass spends that much on something that will be outdated in 6 months - sure it will still be an awesome system but damn that kind of money is stupid.

I reckon for a third of that i can build an equally powerful machine.

I know someone from anoter forum who bought an Alienware for 4 grand, just as 940 pin Athlon FXs obsoleted, with SLIed 7 series graphics cards. He was ridiculed for buying that when he did.

In fact my landlord bought a Dell XPS 2 years ago, SLIed 7 series and a P4-D for 3 grand

He was not impressed the day i came home with my C2D 1.8, 8800GTS combo for 500 squid and outbenched him, not one flipping bit.

The 3 and 4 grand you speak of is US dollar? - If so thats expensive but within the range of high end new release tech. The 5500 pounds is equal to $11,500 US

He'll be talking about GBP mate..shocking isn't it?  blink

I mean any home PC is going to be obsolete to a greater or lesser extent within 6 months and they could lose a huge chunk of their value in the first 12.
I wonder how much the value dropped on that Alienware by the time it shipped.. razz

his one had devalued by 50% by the time he got it... literally a week later the Core2Duos came out and the 8 series wasn't exactly far off either.

I don't know why anyone but the stupid rich would bother getting top of the line PC gear.  It's often too buggy and will too soon be eclipsed by the next generation to bother with.  You can buy one step down for half the cost and upgrade to something better than what you were looking at 6 months later and still save money.

Yeah, i've pretty much decided a yearly upgrade of £500, selling on my old for half what i paid (so a £250 yearly expense) to keep 90% top speed seems like a pretty good deal compared to £1000 every 3 years.

New 9 Series and Barcas/Intels will be out by March (next cycle biggrin)... plus i don't have to worry about futureproofing.

this is my tactic also.

Not counting initial outlay, basically you pay about £20 a month to keep your frame rate smooth, which is very reasonable imo.

There's a question.

Would you pay £20pm to rent a top spec PC and have it replaced with new every year?

Fucking right you would.

The trouble is selling on the old parts. Apart from Eghey there ain't (for me at least) much of a market to sell to.

unfortunately ebay it has to be,

i hate selling pc bits on ebay, with the dreaded "it isn't working" email.

On that note, how long do you give a punter when selling a graphics card for instance?

A week i say.

I ain't sold on it as of yet.
But I reckon that if I know for fact the part/s was/were working on dispatch then they get no come back. Unless they can like, send a picture of damaged packaging. Then in that case surely it;s an insurance claim with the courier ?

Like I say though, I've never navigated the sellers avenue of eBay.
